Not for taking them off the car, but you need one to take the top mounts of the strut, not sure wot its called though, got mine from halfords Edited by: dubstar
theres a grooved nut on the top of the top mount, need a proper tool to take it off if its a mk2 that is, mk3 gti`s just need a offset(?) spanner.
Tried with the mole grips myself, gave up bought the tool, problem eith the nut is that ts round with two cuts in the top the tool fits over the strut rod and into the cut outs, then you just use a 21mm spanner and allen key to undo them, not forgetting the spring clamps
sh*te I bet bloody halfords down here wont stock it!!! ahhh Me and a tech from work are doing new strut tops, suspension, discs and pads tommorow as we can use the ramps at work on sundays! Is there anything else we can use, if they havnt got one at work or halfords. we will have every tool under the sun apart from that!
no chance of using vice grips or something? is it g60 topmounts Dave?
Yeah they are g60 ones
Halfords should have them in stock, cost quite abit payed abotu 25 couple of years ago for mine, don`t think there is any other way of taking it off? unless anyone else knows??
You need McPherson strut nut sockets. You usually get four in a pack to cover the lot. I think Halfords sell them at 15. Please, please don't buy them from them though. They are scum.
Well looks like ill be outside halfords at 10.00am cant beleve it the techy thats doing the work said hes replaced them before and didnt need any special tools [:^(] [:^(] [:^(]
ah ha mabey we already have these at work!! I hope. It is a garage after all is it just mik2s that need these or are there other cars as well!??
not sure about mk1`s , but some mk3`s need them aswell, 4 stud ones i think as my mates vento has got the stupid grooved nuts on the top, my mk3 gti has got proper nuts on the top? go figure Edited by: dubstar
or you could just get a cheap appropriate size socket and grind it so your left with two pegs that fit into the two slots.
