No its fuel injected car then.

I didnt mean it wouldnt be a driver and the bodyshell denotes what it is.

    If you stick a 1.8GTi in a 1.3 CL it becomes a 1.8i CL.

I ment in the spirit of things it inst a ture driver as u've lost the carb element of the engine.

    You question was would a 1.6i beat a 1.8 GTI 8v

    Not would a driver beat a 1.8GTI 8v

well i know a 1.6i will beat a gti, so just take all your drivers and fit injections, miles more mpg and much more fun.

    I got 122 ponies atfw out of my 1.8 driver, costs and mods as follows;

    -Weber Carb - 40 out of a crashed mk2
    -GTi Camshaft - 20
-Rebuilt and DIY ported/polished head - head for free out of the crashed mk2, cost 40 I suppose for materials/seals etc.
    -Matched manifolds
-GTi Exhaust manifold and downpipe - taken from my broken up 8v GTi.

Fairly cheap 122hp if you ask me. I paid 150 for a Kent GS2H camshaft after that though but havent had it on the rollers since.

You forgot the "Smithers" bit... my mates always say that to me

Does about 25-30mpg, 60-70 miles to a tenner round town, on a steady 60-70mph run anything up to 90 to a tenner is possible :)

Sounds like a nice motor Smithy.

I'm gonna do the DIY head polishing and get it skimmed.

Then a proper 8v gti system and tublar manifold.

    Should be fun!

Not too bad I suppose, still drinks more than a GTi which over the course of a year would probably equal out the money saved from insurance (for me that is as i`d only save 150-200), add that to the fact the mods will still cost money and that you`d never get them as cheap as you did (you luck c*nt!) means its probably cheaper to get a GTi. ;)

Thats bloody good. My 1.8 recorded 106 bhp at the wheels with the same spec as yours but with a piper fast road cam and a 4 branch manifold.

Just realised, when you say atfw, do you mean fly wheel or front wheels?

I'd probably feel different about owning a Driver if I didn't have the 1.8 engine.

I just think of it as a decent non-GTI model - no its not a GTI, doesn't make it a bad VW at all.

No harm tuning whats there though and enjoying a Mk2 :p

    edit for spelling [:$]

And they ( the 1.8 Driver ) are not that far behind the 8v GTI in terms of speed anyway

Does all this really matter [:?:]

90 bhp compared to 112 bhp, 9.8 second 0-60 compared to 8.5 0-60 and they`re pretty torquey as well. The only reason I wouldn`t get a driver is the mpg and the fact you don`t save all that much on insurance compared to the cost of the mods to make it look and go like a GTi. Still think any Mk2 is a quality car :p

PS The bloke in your sig is the ugliest bloke I`ve ever seen and my god does he talk some crap.

If set up properly they are pretty good on petrol. Mine always averages 30+ mpg, even with my heavy right foot. And the insurance for a Gti for me is more than double, and thats a standard Gti compared to a modified 1.8 carb.

I've been getting 35-odd mpg lately, more motorway than towns now for getting to work [:D]
Was down to mid-20's when I had a vacuum leak from the brake servo though [8(]

My insurance is 400 fully comp; reckon it'd be at least an extra 200/300 for an 8 or 16-valve GTI.

My take on the whole Driver/GTI thing:
Who cares whether its a GTI or not?
Its a modified VW at least - and different to all the Corsa's or Saxo's buzzing about!!

Always going to be something quicker or flashier - its about enjoying what you've chosen.
