equal length drive shafts on a mk2 golf by adding a drive flange extender
to the gearbox much as quaife do
or as the rally has with it transfer boxes
i am thinking of making a extender
and was wondering if anyone has tried this

It will reduce torque steer significantly. Good idear BTW thought about it many times myself so would be interested in seeing which route you take, please post your results.

I thought you'd need an equal distance from each output cup, which would mean offsetting the gearbox.
Just adding a spacer doesn't mean the distance will be the same will it?

I think the T5 has something on the gearbox to do this.

Certainly remember looking at it on ETKA.

Also only lists one driveshaft part for either side, which implies equal length. . . .

4x4 02m box is closer to equal length. Astras and Fiats etc run a dummy shaft and support bearing

Would be very interested to see how this is done if it can reduce torque steer. Get masses of this and sure this is a cheaper option thann LSD.

I think i would go for a LSD over equal length drive shafts ^ ^

Give me the reasoning behind this. Silly question, I know.

So what your saying is that although equal driveshafts is of benefit, I will still get torque steer when I put the power down if I have about 280 bhp. But equal driveshafts will do nothing for me in the corners, hence the LSD?

Thought this could be a quick fix to an annoying problem.

    Many thanks for the education:thumbup:

The equal length driveshafts will 'help' but certainly won't cure the torquesteer, especially with 280bhp.
The stock VW driveshafts are 'tuned' to remove the torque steer inherant in thier unequal lengths at stock torque figures, as soon as you increase the torque output from the engine then you move outside the shafts design criteria.
An LSD or TBD will make the biggest impact on torque steer..

Out of interest, I have a 02J gearbox with a quaife TBD and a ford galaxy layshaft and equal length driveshafts...

I've found the biggest cause of torque steer in the modified VW community comes from people running low offset wheels without altering the theoretical kinkpin axis to suit...

Mickey - that second short shaft, is that a standard part or one you have had modified?
