Would you be able to afford the insurance on a GTI at 16?

Luke, if it's a GTI you're wanting, you should look to be saving for the insurance, not the car! You'll probably find it costs more!

I wouldn't, not at your age!

Do what we all did, 1.3's + 1.6's for a couple of years (and you'll still be paying ridiculous insurance premiums

and then in 3 years time, get yourself a GTI.

    You'll appreciate it more ;)

i'd be looking at drivers or CL's instead, getting some no claims discount saved up then come back for a GTI

insurance is going to be huge! [8(]

Wouldn't recommend that either - get your own insurance with your own no claims bonus totting up.

You wikll kick yourself soooo hard in a few years if you don't (ask richgit)

It will be insured by them until i finish uni and hopefully get a job, so then ill be abale to afford the insurance.

I have been looking at drivers and cl's, but id like a 2.0l lump, as i would want to keep the car for 5 years poss.

Even with your parents insuring it its still gonna be high due to you being so young, personally i would go for the Mk2 1.6 driver, if you want to do anything to the engine tha get the GTI cam ECT

a GTI for your first car is just stupid

Having little experience on the road with a car with that power under your foot with just end up with you getting points or even banned, you will be to tempted to floor it everywhere.

Wait untill you have a few no claims under your belt and more experience on the road then get a GTI

    wouldnt we all TBH!

Honestly Luke, you asked for advice and you've been given it. You're not going to get any different advice.

Pretty sure we all wanted GTI's when we passed tests etc, I passed mine
over 8 years ago and only chopped my 1.3 in for a GTI less than 2 years
    ago.

    Sorry dude [:v:]

Thats true, i would be tempted to speed, a Mk3 1.8 driver would be a good choice? Not too powerful?

Still going to be crippling insurance. Why don't you get a 1.4 Mk3 and then go for something else a few years later

unless you are minted, there has been a lot of good advice so far in this thread, from folk who know as they have saved hard to afford the cars they want.

Go for a mk2 1.3, there is1.6 and a 1.8 driver but at 17 even thats to big, start off small mate and clime your way up to the GTI, if your looking for a mk 3 the go for the 1.4, thats more than enough power for such a young driver

Its NOT all about power and speed

Also would you be doing it up as in maxpower crap, or keep it subtle?

I've got lots of quote from different insurance companies... all with the similar price.

I think it would be even beter to go for a polo? 1.4 cl or something
like that. Then work my way up in the coming years. Also i would be
keeping the car standard, except some nice rims, and a few mods to the
    engine.

@jettas: they do wipe my ass, its very kinky infact ;)
