hi all, my scirocco 1.8 gtII is fitted with the standard webber replacement for the old 2e2.

the problem is that it does not hold idle well when cold. once at normal temp its fine.

basically i would like to check that i am using the right timing and mixture settings just to make sure.

for the timing i am setting it to around 17degrees +- 1 degree - this is done with the dizzy vac pipe left CONNECTED (is that right?)

second im not sure of the mixture setting but i would guess it should be around the same as with the old 2e2? i set this roughly so its in the right range near enough. (good old colour tune, stupid gunson gas analyzer!)

also my last question is that the choke does not seem to raise the idle as it did when i had a mk1 with a webber, is this correct?

thanks guys - just want to check cos it drives me a little bit mad everyday [:*:]

Timing seems right (comparing to mine-see sig) with dizzy vac pipe connected. I used gunsons colour tune for the CO, works a treat.
The choke should raise the idle speed, well mine does.
Check where the choke cable connects to the carb.

If its running alright to drive a little distance I would just book it in to your local garage for a carb and timing set up. Cost me a tenner and they did it there and then, a ten minute job.

    Hi guys.

the car runs super when warm (finlly lol - i love clour tune) and i think the reason it does not hold idle well when cols is teh choke does not raise teh idle speed! i didnt think it was correct!

could some one please do a detailed pic of their linkage - i.e the choke/acc linkage side of the carb. I may need to order some parts :(

    thanks guys :)

There is an adjuster nut on the throttle bracket, when the choke is opened it moves against that adjuster nut and pushes open the throttle slightly. Get someone to operate the choke in and out while you watch it - it'll become clear. The throttle just needs to open a fraction. I think mine idles at 1500 - 1750rpm with the choke fully out.
Bear in mind that all the pics on the link are for cars with automatic gearboxes so the throttle barckets are slightly different :)

adamnmcc - I fitted a new one from GSF - about 8 i think. If your original one looks split in anyway you'll get a vacuum leak and it wont run properly:)

You sure it was 8 from GSF? I fitted a new one to my webber, and it was 20 from GSF.

I am deffo missing the arm that makes contact with the throttle from the choke [8(]

    hence why it does nothing.

I did look for something i could adjust but cant see anything at all.

in fact one sec ill take a pic.

I'm not too sure actually[:$] , it wasn't a huge amount anyway - and well worth it compared to the ball ache if you find out yours is fooked after fitting

**edit part nr 18310 20ish from GSF**

mine was a metal plate with a rubber inner.. this correct? and yeah it was pretty messed up.. large bit was starting to break off inside.

Yeah that sounds right. I think its 2 metal plates with rubber holding it all together. If yours has a tiny hole in it, replacing it can make a big difference. My engine used to idle at 900 and the fluctuate +/- 200revs. After replacing the rubber mounting, its does not fluctate at all
