Volkswagen still produced it though, for the few nutters that wanted it. The same way Ford produce these "motor sport themed" cars for the few folks that want them too. I am sure Peugeot produced Roland Garros limited edition 205s, presumably for the few tennis nutters out there. The other side of this is all the manufacturers produce boring standard cars that boring folks can drive around whilst complaining and casting judgment on these limited edition models. Modern safety, eco / aero designs pretty much restrict what can actually be built as a production car for the general population to use on the road these days. Resulting in styling being the one free option that of course in our "superficial plastic style society" is lapped up.
harlequine edition, roland garros edition, addidas edition.. they might be tasteless/tacky but they dont exploit or cheapen the colours/names that form the brands racing heritage. neither are they pretending to be anything other than cheap marketing ploys. but this ford is dressed up like a racecar. thats all sorts of wrong same as fake dump valves and unnecessary bonnet scoops. all it needs to complete 'the look' is a rollcage made out of plastic waste pipe irony of all this is that somewhere between the rs500 edition and lemans edition theres a cool car. no reason the rs500 couldnt have had the aero package theyve got on the btcc car, tear out all the option/interior/ghey plaque to save money for a brakes upgrade and a cage and your there. then give it the same paint job as the btcc car. call it the btcc edition. that would be a cool car
they did a Monte Carlo version of the Escort RS Cosworth, only made under 500 I think. Not much changed, new paint colour, monte stiched seats and a badge telling you which number it was along with some monte wheels.. Looked lovely, but not really that different... hence why these cars are not really going for more money than a standard BT or ST Cossie. I dont agree with big white strips on cars, I say let the engine and chassie do the talking
They made the Monte, because they'd won the Monte, the most famous WRC round I soon had a strip off Audi a few years ago when they started talking out of their backsides ref the Q7: http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=96035
yeah true, I know they won the Monte, but you would of thought they would of changed the car a bit more, maybe made it quicker.. They detuned the cosworth engine for production, standard they was producing 280bhp, but ford knew the insurance company would stamp the car out so detuned it slightly, restricted exhaust along with other items.
Again just like that RS500 thread there is a load of people winging about Ford Focus on a VOLKSWAGEN FORUM ,about it being some sort of sacrilege. This time its not the badge upsetting people its the colour scheme FFS.
