Will definitely do a compression test on it though.

    Hope so!

Say if the head gasket had gone, would this have caused the engine to loose power and cut out ?

It was like something blew when i was driving it, total power loss!

    Was deffo smoke Tommy :)

It smelt like something was burning tbh, and was a dark colour. Cant remember if there was smoke coming out of the exhaust, probably was, but as i was in a dangerous position on a fast dual carriage way, all i was concerned about was getting my precious MK2 out of the way ;).

As soon as i pulled over i lifted the bonnet to see dark smoke coming from the airbox, with a strong burning smell.

    Forgot to add...

While out driving yesterday, i did notice that the turbo was really quiet, and it wasn't boosting as it should.

It was like driving an NA 20v. I just put this down to the quiet Jetex and air box which ive recently fitted.

Could a faulty N75 or ignition amp cause these issues i had ?

what's the oil on the dipstick like if it's ok i would not worry too much about the oil on the cam not just yet as said it could be condensation

    the smoke could be anything

i would check your getting fuel out the injectors or spark do the compression test
check all the timing marks line up
also check you'v not got oil lots of oil from the turbo in the inlet

dose it sound like it's trying to fire

i would of thought it would be your ign amp but you've moved it... cant be of much help but hope its nothing serious

edit just seen your last post..if you want to check your ign amp, take the plastic cover off, needs to knifed around the edge as its sealed.. should be a few transistors (i think) check to see if any of wires have come off... saves you buying a new one as it can be repaired.

or switch it with your mk4 agu

thats if it is that :)

Well guys, ive bought a compression tester today, got home early and went straight around the garage to give it a go.

Upon removing the spark plugs, the plug in cylinder 3 was very tight. So tight i had to use a breaker bar on it.

This is what i found :(

The spark plug has completely melted!! Which leads me to believe its a broken valve, or maybe worse :(

What do you think guys ?

I also still carried out the compression test -

    1. 120 psi
    2. 130
    3. 0
    4. 10

Cylinder 3 is obviously dead, and number 4 has a low reading!

hey Rich thats really sucks about the plugs mate but i had some bitter sweet info for you.

i just had a look about and it seems this has happened to a couple of others around the world and it turns out the piston rings have failed cause the car to not fire and lose compression. it seems like it's going to be a rebuild for you i'm afraid.

i hope you get it sorted soon it might be worth pulling the head off and seeing what the piston looks like.

P.S this also happened on the 3rd cylinder on other vehicles

Looks more like a dropped valve
Don't think you'll be able to tell if the it was the plug electrode dropping out
    That did it or not

    Not good Rich
Good thing is that engines are much cheaper these days.Check the turbo for any debris that may have passed through the hot side too.

Cheers mate, might take you up on that offer

Yeah i know Mushy, im truley gutted :(

I thought the engine was in good shape, but obviously not!

Cheers for the info Pricey. :)

I think i'll whip the head off and have a good look at whats happened in there. I know it wont be pretty!

Its a shame, as the engine pulled really well, had fresh oil and coolant in it, as well as new gaskets, ect. This was the last thing i thought would happen.

No luck with a replacement just yet, as above, i'll remove the head and see whats happened in there.

If a piston has gone, its definitely new complete engine ?

If a valve has caused the mess, would a replacement head sort it out ?
