I want to uprate the brakes on my Mk2, but not so sure of what I need. I want to keep my BBS RAs on it, so wouldent want too big a disk, and deffo dont want to have to put spacers on it. Any advice would be a great help. Thanks

What year is your Mk2? Later ones have 256mm brakes to begin with...

Its a 86 Model. Don't know if it's true, but looking on some of the sites and forums, some say I will have to change the brake cables as well,is that the case? Thanks

If your car is an 8valve, it will originally have left the factory with 239mm brakes. All mk2 GTI 8v (not G60s) cars came with 239mm.
This is not to say they have not been upgraded at some point in the past. If you take off a front wheel and measure the disc diameter to confirm what you have first, we can help. If your car has standard 239mm brakes, you will need the larger 19mm bottom balljoints too if converting to the 256mm hub.

Wut? 8vs have 239mm, 16v have 256mm and G60 has 280mm. Not early and late.

early 16v's come with the 239mm discs as i changed mine for 280mm g60's but i run 16" RH cups with 20mm spacers just to clear the calipers looks sweet though.[:D]

No not the front,I was going to put mk4's on the back and heard that you had to change cables so took it that it must of been the hand brake cables but now somebody has said upgrade the front and just re-new the back ie: pads, discks, brake pipes as all the stopping is done mostly by the front brakes anyway.

right, just that nothing in the thread suggested you meant the rears,i was once told the standard rears are good for 200bhp,think the reason people change them is for more reliable calipers rather than better stopping power

turnipmuncher- if you find the other chapters post them up ,i couldnt find them

I love the way he just lets the brake fluid go all over his inner arch and floor.

"driver's rare wheel" + "passenger wear wheel"

    I'd "recommendated" that!

    The word is `what`...

And as has already been pointed out; pre-89 all GTIs, regardless of 8v or 16v had 239mm vented discs.

Once again, you prove yourself to be a retard...
