1st pic whereabout is it on the main loom? 2nd pic is definitely not original ABF loom related so no worries there
Sorry dude I didn't check forum when I was at the garage. Had my mate with me who's good at getting @#$! done so we focused on getting the engine and box out. Found a couple of small bits of metal work I'm going to get done to save a bigger bill later while the access is good. Will have a look tomorrow at the loom and report back what I see.
Slight oversight on my part i weighed the cat in with the donor car as I assumed it would be the same so either the 1.8 8v better be up to it or I'm searching for another donor or getting a 200 cell cat welded in. That's future Sam's problem anyway.....
Roll bar question the golf seems to have ball joint style drop links (first pic) and the vento seems to have slide on the end types. Is there a benefit to either one as the new wishbones match both the vento and golf wishbones
1st one is for 5 stud cars, 2nd is 4 stud. no real benefit either way in terms of design, though the 5 stud one is a bit easier to fit. thicker the roll bar the better it works (though thicker not always desirable depending on how you're setting up the car and for what use) in short, use the right roll bar to match the wishbones
Cheers dude I checked the Haynes and it confirmed what I thought I was seeing under 25 years of crud. The gti ones thread on to the anti roll bar rather than push/ wiggle on like the 4 stuff setup in used to working on. Radiator turned up today and had a small panic when it didn't fit in the housing assembly for the vento but fits the golf one fine. I'm guessing/hoping i shouldn't have any bonnet alignment issues using the assembly from the golf as when people put the vento front end on golfs it was just bumper, lights and bonnet that people swapped if I recall correctly. The vento lights seem to sit fine in there and bolt holes lined up. I'm guessing this is how the 2.0 8v gti (gl model maybe?) & vr6 engined ventos are setup. Bigger cooling probably worth having for potential 1.8t. Managed to clean and shoot some paint on some bits I'm keeping that were a bit ropey. battery tray etc. Hoping to be done with cleaning the engine bay tomorrow. Going to treat some rust scabs while it's all out. Waiting for a call back from a local company that makes power steering hoses to spec after seeing the prices of those. If the price is substantially better I'll give them a shout as a couple of local mechanics have recommended them. not too bothered about it being concourse for shows going more oem+ setup and fast road setup rather than track weapon. Would like to daily her again when I'm happy with the setup.
no worries with the fan setup, non of the fan stuff or lock carrier is golf or vento specific so it'll all go right on no problem
Thank you kindly sir. Done with degreasing the engine bay, just need to wash it now. Got the stuck drop link out with some heat. Shot some paint on the cross member, new tank straps and anti roll bar. One of the Vento roll bar bolts is just spinning so that's tomorrow's problem. Hopefully get the hubs separated, painted and new bearings pressed over the next couple of days. Caliper rebuild company is being non communicative so need to find someone else tomorrow. I need to do some research on how the hydraulic clutch setup plumbs in as I didn't strip the car but I'm sure some searching of the forum or googling will show me. I found exploded diagrams but need to find some pics of how it looks. I've got a new master and slave and a braid hose to link the 2 as the original piping hadn't been stored very delicately. And we all know braid is at least a stage 37 tune! Found the brake master was leaking on the vento and it's given me a bit of tin worm in an awkward to get at place when the car is back together so I've got a welder coming to look at that for me over the weekend. I've bought a new brake master for the golf so I'm going to throw the servo on from the golf as I imagine it is better. Which means taking the dash out He reckons from the photo he should be able to sort it one way or the other. There's one other thing creeping about the back of my mind which is the immobiliser. I really need to spend some time with the loom and see if it was an aftermarket immobiliser or just a cheap copied key with the chip in a grey piece of plastic on the key ring. With it being a 95 it should have a factory one and by that logic if it is a factory one I should be able to pair it with my vento immobiliser unit and keys. It definitely had an aftermarket alarm. As stated earlier it enjoyed singing in the wee hours. I believe I can use vcds to pair the immobiliser with the ecu if it is a factory immobiliser. Oh the joys.
Mk3 golf / vento cable to hydraulic clutch conversion info for anyone who needs it i will try to remember to edit this post with additional information after incase it helps anyone. Between the exploded diagram, Haynes manual and this link i think I can piece it together https://forums.vwvortex.com/showthr...r-replacement-how-to-write-up#/topics/3458482
so far as I know you remove cable, fit bung, then remove clutch master bung, bolt the master in? with ECU if its AE or BE code its got an immobiliser, and if your car is post-96 you just need a licenced version of vagcom to code the existing box to the new ecu takes all of 30 seconds if its a non-immo ecu you can swap an immobilised one over and code it if you want it to work, or just fit the new ecu and it'll ignore the immobiliser box
Dude you are a hero. Thanks for being quick on the answers. You are seriously helping me realise a dream here. Who knows when this rona madness is over I can pay you with a crisp high five if I bump in to you at a show. I've never messed with the hydro setup so just want to make sure anyone else who doesn't know and Googles a similar task they might be able to find some answers. As for vagcom I'm not sure what my mates got he just plugs it in and tells me if I have problems with my mk1 leon cupra. Plenty of vag specialists local if his isn't up to snuff or I'll just get my own as I've recently picked up a lwb t4 too. The vento is on a R plate and the golf is on an N Vento 1997 Golf 1995 Going to try and get the braking system moved along today. Caliper rebuild company needed, need to work out if i need a 4 or 6 brake hose kit and get some new solid lines after I have measured up how much i need, and get some fittings ordered as they are showing their age also.
Jumping in, and asking a question about the hydro clutch, do you need to put a spring on the pedal, seen some stuff saying that the hydraulic one uses it, some not. Same as mk4, beetle, etc, looks like a mini coilover, and just clips in the mechanism between pedal and bulkhead, grabbed one at scrappy last time as saw some mk2 used them, but cant work out where, I'm converting to hydraulic for the mk2 auto.
the hydo mk2 all had the spring, as does corrado etc. on the cable mk2 only the self-adjusting cable cars got them. tbh i dont think its really necessary mind, my driver didnt have a spring and i fitted one but noticed no real difference. but if it was me I would fit one regardless, semi-decent pic of one at the bottom of first post in this thread. also shows the plastic pedal stop that often goes missing too: https://clubgti.com/forums/index.ph...art-numbers-with-clutch-cable-bracket.107068/
Cheers guys I've just noticed my gti beam appears to be missing the brake proportioning valve thing but has the spring. Can I just cut the bracket off the vento one and get it welded into position or should I look at a brake bias valve setup. I'm going non abs setup. Think my rear stub axles probably should be replaced too looking at them. Does the mk3 gti beams anti roll bar add much to the handling? I'm guessing it adds something.
the bias valve bracket is part of the beam pivot, just unbolt it off the vento and swap jobs a goodun might even be better to leave your beam pivots on the car if you can get the long bolts out of the bushes while its on the car?
That's a shout that dude. I think because I'm juggling a million things trying to get as much done as I can while I'm off work I'm missing the obvious in some cases
Just found one of your posts on a different thread confirming what I thought, that all mk3 pedal boxes are the same one less thing for me to swap
Couple of brake questions if you or anyone else can chime in with some wisdom. Braided hose kit for a mk3 golf. What's the difference between a 4 and 6 hose kit? Is there extra hoses on abs? I would have thought 4 would be all that's needed 1 per caliper/ drum. Anyone got some pad recommendations i got a good deal on some vented solid brembo discs just need some pads. Yellow stuff comes up a lot as recommendations. I take it I need to be careful that I don't get ones for 288mm ones as vr6 ones are coming up a lot. Sorry if this is a stupid question. With the 8v gti's being 280mm are those the same pads as what I would need, just to widen my search terms. And to confirm are the rears the same ?
FOr the hoses, Isn't it 4 for drum, 6 for disc rear as flexi from trailing arm to caliper, as well as body to beam and fronts.
Better than anything I managed to dream up dude but surely the drums move as much as a caliper would. I'll keep digging round and messaging sellers. Tbh with everything I've still got to do the replacement of brake lines can be a project in itself (at least to me) so this one not mega urgent for now. Just want to ask the questions as I notice the headache She won't be going near the road until I'm happy. Fortunately I've got about 100 meters of private car park to test functionality when it starts getting back together. Desperate to get back at it today but will see if the Mrs has other plans for me
