at the ring i used half a tank in just over 100 miles, so for you to manage that on the road you must have seized brakes i can death (southern death) mine and still, without fail, ever, it will get 300 miles per tank, so compared to a pd130 (and comparing petrol/diesel prices) mine gives a pd130 a run for its money in terms of cost/fun in terms of pace i could throw a few hundred quid at mine and gain 5bhp. you could throw a few hundred quid at the pd130 and gain 50bhp absolutely loved my old audi though, some very fond memories
you can definately get over 300 miles to a tank in the 16v. I was at uni in falmouth, cornwall. On my way back to sussex i would leave about 10 at night. I would fill up at the shell garage in carnon downs and do the 312.7 mile journey to my door averaging 75+ mph on one tank, and still have enough to drive to the local town the next day to fill up. For day to day driving, i think i got so-so fuel economy in the PD because the power is more accessible being lower down the revs... so I used it to its full every gear change. With the valver... i hardly ever go above 4000 rpm when im driving around normally so you can easily get 35+ mpg... and then when you want the power to get rid of an annoying rep on your tale or the local chav in his 106 gti you just drop it down a few gears and away you go.
I can drain the tank of my GTI in little over 140 miles. And my brakes are just fine. Round the 'ring is not so different from sweeping backroads where the engines revs are concerned - long periods up over 6000 RPM. Certainly for the roads around me. Hell, my 911 is more economical doing sub 9 minute laps of the ring than it is driving it into work! I get 18MPG out of that, at racetrack speeds/revs. I only get that on the road here...
those miles were on mfa and i ragged it for the final 80 miles from dover back to home. 50 or 55 litre tank.
Done the math... 55 litre tank = a shade under 12 gallons at 70mph i get 35 mpg 12 x 35 = 420 miles sounds like its do-able... just and matts geriatric engine seems to put out 40mpg maybe yours will get more economical in its old age glen!
I doubt it... The gearing seems to get lower, the cams lairier and the inlet holes more numerous...ahh well. Never mind.
typically mine will do 310-320 between fill ups and take 43-45 litres to brim it again. glen, if yours has pants mpg, ill agree to a temporary swap with mine
That's a very kind offer... But, for all the miles I do in it...i'll live with the pants MPG. Besides, you'd have to come 'oop north' and help me re-build it before it could go anywhere...and you southern softies couldn't handle the Scottish winter!
mine regularly runs from cheshire to essex, thats about as far ooop north as i dare take it. whats the rebuild in aid of? mine is due another oil change, i want to pull my finger out and reconnect my catch tank back to the airbox and ill be happier again.
regarding the ABF enigine MPG, i actually remembered to zero the trip computer the last time i filled up- so far the passat has done 350 miles and still has just under a third of a tank left (bearing in mind its got a 70 litre tank) thats a mix of town and spirited a-road/motorway driving and i have a ported head on it . . . so the head dont seem to affect economy at all. and the cluster mpg seems pretty accurate- seeing as it doesnt have a vacuum feed going to the clocks and takes the data from the ecu i guess it accounts for the extra fuel at low revs it must put in to match the increased air flow?
have you ever had a head rebuild matt? boads well for my lump if yours is knocking out 170 horses and still going strong at 200k...
I picked my 2.0 back up from work last night, after 6 days in the mondeo! my god its good to be back in a proper smooth engine!! I had forgot how quick it was too when overtaking at 70
the engine has never been had its head off. but ive seen an abf head for sale for 40... i wanna gas flow it [:^(] thatll only lead to trouble, i know it
