Yup I can easily get 40+ MPG from mine but I have to drive it like my granny. 35+MPG can still be had easily. Givng it death - Can't say I've noticed as it rarely gets it (only because I'm too skint); but it's far less. I'm happy with the MPG for now but I know that one day it will drink it.

OMG...you lads need to go buy diesels.

Why buy a multi-valve petrol, then drive for economy?
    -C. Must try harder.

^^^ sounds like a normal top gear style test to me...... proving pointless stuff!!!! Similar to the whole "wow watch as the mk1 beats a mk2/3/4 8v GTI's..... failing to point out that the 16v's would be quicker

Although I did have a titanium x mondeo with that 2.2 TDCI engine and it went like stink.... probably my favorite diesel engine of the cars I have owned

my car is just great (despite it blowing up in a dream lastnight), i cane it a lot and it still does over 300 miles on every tank

for me to match your mpg, id be having to drive at 8 10th round the ring all day long, and even then i think my car was drinking less than yours

..... got a hole in the tank?

My Tauran PD130 Performs excellent at towing the MK1 to the tracks. 36mpg all the way.

Done 47k in 18 months thou !! think it will be going soon and a T5 2.5TDI will be on it way.

Glen you are dead right but if I could afford to polybush, ARB and a decent set of shocks and then fill it up with optimax without a care for my wallet or new rubber then it would get death readily. I have mechanical sympathy but I also sport a heavy right foot. I have well laid out plans but fruition requires cash which at present I have very little of - I'm biding my time and nursing it along; that's all! :)

Could be a tired lambda sensor? Slow response and running crap/rich on closed loop?

    Optimax? Pah!
I use any old stuff...BP Ultimate it likes though.

    On mine?
Lambda is fine...fuelling is fine too. Just 7400 RPM often and getting to the max of the injectors = low fuel economy.

Optimax is just a habit more than anything else.

That would be an 'Ultimate' Dub that you have then Glen? :)

Yeah sorry I meant on yours but as you say 100% duty cycle and 7400RPM will surely drink the bang stuff.

Mine is certainly not an ultimate anything.
I don't get many 'scene points' either.
Hell, I don't even have stretched tyres...

Stretched tyres n scene points don't interest me either - I didn't mean to offend.

    I know...
My tyres are wider than my wheels.
My wheels are the same width front and rear.
Hell, my tyres even have the standard writing on the sidewalls.

My coilovers aren't even at their lowest...and my 'airbags' are in the dash...not in the suspension.

    I feel ashamed.
    There is no hope.

This is shocking , i gave my tdi130 mappee to 190 the beans saturday and got 38mpg, i can drive at 80 (i find it sits best there) and retreive a good 49.9mpg easy on a run.
Its by no means slow, mynes 0-60 in 6.3 seconds the torque is alot and agreed it stall east as my cousin found out saturday when testing it lol.
Id say mynes up there with a good tuned vr6 for speed and power
