From: http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=208647 Awesome Rich. What lense and camera do you use
I have just bought a 1000D. Spot on for what i need generally but just have the standard 15-55mm lense. What would you recomend for this body for track photos. I dont want a cheap lense, but some thing that will get some good photos with costing 1000's. There are so many on the market its a little confusing
Something like the canon 70-300mm IS lens would be more than fine!! The next step up from that would be the 70-200mm F4 for about 500!! Lenses are getting more expensive by the day due to the pound being utterly shoot!!
Cheers Rich, Sorry to hijack this thread with a what to buy but it is revelent to Track photos. Is this the one Linky
i dont know a huge amount yet but i have this 70-300 sigma lens and i am very happy with the results have had it a few years and every time iv been at santa pod on the bank the images have been crisp. (providing i got them in focus ) http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/lenses/telezoom/70-300mmOS.htm
Nice one chirs... VERY good idea! If only other forums were this efficient! :-) Samn... yeah thats another option... the sigma is about 100 quid cheaper than the canon ... but id buy the canon (its got a better focusing system) if you budget allows! Rich
*personally* I don't bother with IS lenses - I'd rather put the money towards something else, like a faster lens.
I agree but a 2.8 lens is gonna be way over budget!! Pascall.... That's the one... Shop around for a good price tho!!!
In my limited experience, the focusing ability of expensive lenses is far better than that of cheap zooms. For this reason, when panning, i now always use my 50mm F1.4 and crop if need be. IS and VR only help with camera shake, if your subject is moving a fast lens is better, as Dex says.
Any links Seems about my budget. What would be a good price for this lense. What does a 2.8 mean. Sorry Newbie here. And also ive seen USM on a lot of lenses Also as Stu said what is a tele-converter.
in terms of a motorsport lens I'd be looking at a 70-200 F2.8 Sigma EX DG (and a teleconverter for when you need to go long) With a 1.5x TC you lose a stop so it becomes an F4, but you then have a decent range of focal lengths covered with one lens and a TC. IS is no subsitute for correct technique. If you *have* to run a very slow shutter speed, for a still subject, and you don't have a tripod, then IS will let you get away with a couple more stops than hand holding will. That situation has never arisen for me. I'll always take the faster lens, more flexibility on DoF and focusing (lenses focus wide open, so faster lens gives more light for the AF to work with) and just hand hold with good technique. Others will tell you the exact opposite - there's no right or wrong. Except the others, they're wrong. Bit of a panning shot - taken with a Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG on the front of a Pentax *Ist D (if you don't know - that's a very early first generation D-SLR) The 1/Focal length rule says for a hand held shot your shutter speed needs to be 1/Focal Length or faster (compared to 35mm Equiv) The shot was taken at 200mm, so 300mm Equivalent giving 1/300sec shutter speed required. Shot taken at 1/90sec, F13. (Please ignore copyright watermark, Image is now copyright Redline Magazine)
That shot's not an amazing demo of panning- as the car had fairly minimal lateral movement, but there was just enough to get some blur on the background.
