Out of situ for me - tenner for an engine crane hire, pull the whole lot out and then you can sort all those annoying bits out while you have the engine and box on the garage floor. 30 minutes to take it all out, easy.

Nope, on the driveway mate! An engine crane makes it super-easy. I do have air tools which speeds things up a bit, and I have done about a million of them before..... but I'm still voting "out of situ"! Have to hate those broken ribs when the box drops on your chest, otherwise.....

I agree 100% with the God fella. I could never imagine doing a clutch/gearbox change with the engine in the car.

    Nightmare!

I've done a couple of clutches with a mate outside my house, with just a couple of trolley jacks and axle stands. Both times we left the engine in.
    The cars were a mk2 16v and mk3 vr6.
Anyone who thinks they can get a vr6 gearbox out in 30 minutes, well i'd like to see that

I'd have the whole engine and box out in that time - taking the box out seperately might be a different matter!

VW book time for a clutch on a vr6 is 5 hours, that with all the lifting equipment. So i can't see anyone getting it done much quicker than that.

Never been to my house then...... book time relies on taking the box out seperately. I don't. If bolts shear it might be a different matter though......

I did take an engine and gearbox out of a scirocco, its currently still in my shed. It didn't take long as it was only an 8v. VR6 is a different matter.

Unlesss the manifold-downpipe bolts are difficult (Like round off) or you don't take a second to hammer the 12-pointer into each driveshaft flange bolt firmly, anyone could have the engone out in an hour for an 8v, even a fool with no air toolsand no engine crane. The VR's I lift the car and drop the whole lot out from underneath. With a proper set of tools - 1/2 an hour easy meat. I think 800g's does them in less than a minute........
