I agree it was a cracking review, made me want one more than ever, perhaps I can get one from work in replacement of the A3 in may.

As soon as I got the A3 I knew I wanted a Mk1 or 2 for the weekend, If I had the MK5 GTi I could probably make do with just one car  (and get a GSX 600R to put in the garage)

Great review, I like the look of it, and the seats looked really nice as well. Didnt think it looked great on the corners at all though, huge understeer by the looks of things [:s]

I think what youre forgetting here guys is Top Gear is entertainment and nothing more. Its aimed at people who buy Vauxhall Saffiras not enthusiasts who might know what theyre talking about.

    p.s. The 924 engine isn't out of a van.

Yeah, to be fair, it's by no means a level playing field. I can't remember where from, but I thought that it'd spank the type R. It just wouldn't suprise me if there were a few red faces @ VAG today.

Can't see it ever beating the tyre r, the type r's got 220bhp+ and weighs a lot less than the mkv!

Good review though, if it makes the GTI sell then perhaps there's hope that vw will get on and do the next generation of the R32.

Still think it looks like a 307 though!!

Anyone want a porsche for 1500

I thought it had 197bhp!! Type R that is! could be wrong!

The GTI would have loads more torque I would expect also!

Yeah, that's what I was working on until then. But now I remember that they uprated them a bit (a lot), so yup, probs will never beat the TYPE R!

Golf has over 200 lb/ft, CTR has 145. And yes, it does have 197bhp.
Did they get a lap time?
R32 is still clinging in there at 1.33.1 (same as Merc SL55 AMG).

Of course you can all drive the new GTI much better and faster than the stig, and your critisism of his driving based on a few secs of video are highly acurate ;)

No more power in the newer CTR, just a lightened flywheel which knocks a fraction off the 0-60 time.
I think it can safely be said that The Stig knows how to get a good lap time in a car.

good show only ruined by the GF moaning on about JC and how much he was being paid to say how much he loved the car, plus she thought it was ugly and wouldn't shut up about it. [:x]

But you have to agree, he lost about 1 second on the start line. And he didnt look tidy through the corners.

He does that nearly everytime they show the fast lap.

Maybe thats just the way the GTI handles in the corners...

    are you sure?!?
unless ive gone barking mad, the engine is a 2.0l jobbie that they sourced from the VAG parts bin. Ergo, it was found in the VW LT.

Going back to the Mk5, I've driven a few of them now and they're a definite improvement over the Mk3/4, factory handling has been improved, definitely better through the corners! ;)

I repeat the engine is from a '77 Audi 100, it's WA or WF engine code. It's a slant 4 water cooled engine and I've never seen one in an LT. The LT is fited with the later engine although 6 cylinder but similar in design to the 5 cylinder audi lump. The '77 LT engine was an older engine with a rocker valve arangement.
