Think about it, where are they all?! have they all been crashed, rotten away? Escort/ FiestaRS Turbo XR3i Any Cosworth Nova GTE/GSi/SR Astra GTE Clio 16v Renault 21 turbo Renault 5 GT Turbo Renault 19 16v "chamade" (lol! class name) Diahatsi Charade GTTI (3 cylinder turbo!) Suzuki Swift etc etc (feel free to add more) When was the last time you saw any of these? i don't seem to see that many mk2 golfs about these days either, but a hell of a lot more than the rest of the bunch from that era.
Anything other than a VW fell to bits, rusted to bits, blew itslef to bits or those that actually survived got crashed by chavs after thay had depreciated to 3% of their original value
the only two i see regular are 16v r 19 and escort rs turbo and thats only cos they are living in the same village as me
not a hot hatch, but E30 BMW's, don't see those about much either. what about Cavaliers! not seen one of those for years.
I had a R5 GTT for my 18th birthday in 1998, just checked the RAC reg checker and it says it's off the road now Was a great, original car too.
Saw a Renault 21 Turbo the other day. MASSIVE car! Also caught a grandard driving the original yellow Nova 1.3 SR with like a brown interior! Gross! What else is there? Mazda 323 Turbo i think? 1.8 Turbo with 4wd? Honda CRX Citreon AX GT/GTI
most of the classic stuff being older seems to be used less like us mk1 owners on weekends or special days. did see a lovely mk1 escort rally car at a services the other day, couldn't take my eyes off it as i drove past.
That pretty much sums it up, but you missed the huge number that got stolen The Mk2 Cavalier was one of the fastest disappearing cars off our roads according to an article I read recently... For years scrappys were full of 'em, now they are a rare sight. Mk1 Astra GTEs... Hardly any left. I bet the number of Fiat Stradas of ANY kind on our roads is less than a couple of dozen, let alone the Abarth/TC ones! Sites like retro-rides are starting to generate an interest in some of them, lots of people on there eagerly looking to preserve tidy stock Novas, Cavs, Mk1 Astras etc.
Darren try to find a mk1 without any rust on it..........Hmm just find a mk1 one . & mk2's aren't great either for rust spots.
I was in 2 minds to list them down, but i see a few around to be honest. Might just be around me. Since a Renualt 21 is down, i'll list a Pug 405 Mi16
Was gonna say you missed the 205 GTI - i had a 1.6 GTI back in 2001, seems thats off the road too - shame! Fantastic cars.
slight subconcious bias being a vw owner perhaps ? i see just as little of golfs as i do any car in that list.
What with all the other hot hatches going, and our own motors getting rarer, it should give us all the added incentive to look after what we've got, make it last longer and preserve motoring history, (damnbusters theme now starts playing in the background), for us not to be swayed into buying a modern imageless box, but to clean and polish, repair and re-use, preserve and personify the great engineering feat that is Volkswagen. So come on, endure the pain of breakdowns and of water in your footwells, the hours of toil and of unaffordable expense, for in time to come, all will be repayed to you by the admiring looks of those faceless box drivers, by the longing of the boy racer who knows that he will never get the chance to drive the GTi, and the knowledge that you have played your part in the presevation of a motoring icon.... (best man speaches and bar mitsvahs catered for)
Great article in the back of PPC this month about recycling and the modern trend towards more environmentally friendly cars Basic upshot was that however small the emissions of the modern euro-box it still takes more energy to build it than an existing car will use in it's entire life. So the only thing more environmentally friendly than your new Toyota Prius is your old Volkswagen! Makes perfect sense to me - My cars are never less than ten years old, so I'm doing my bit for the environment.
