Same place as it is on all the 20v engines - on the block next to the bellhousing, to the right of the oil filter housing. If it's been in the car a while, it'll be covered in grime.
How about if it was rusted and when you clean it up you cant read it, is it the same number thats on the cam belt cover?
Apparently so, but cam belt cover could well have been changed in it's life, so probably not the most reliable source.
^^ As you stand in front of your car it's the very front left most part of the top of the cylinder head.
Standing at drivers headlight> Looking straight down at head directly in-front of car> Again standing at drivers headlight> Close-up of tab> Standing at passenger wheel and looking across bay>(Rocker cover removed here) It may be hard to see at first due to the plastic engine cover, pipes, etc, but its there just behind throttle body on the timing belt end of head, as above Brian.
Thanks Brian. If anyone has engine block number location pics also, that would top this thread off nicely.
The codes Ive found> Front of block over oil filter flange> ''1.6L'' Rear of block behind cylinder number 1 is the part number, ''06A103021C''> These are the only codes Ive found other than the manufacturing date marks and random meaningless casting tags. Brian.
cheers, there reason i said tag with AUG, BAM etc on was i didnt realise it was on that chunky bit of metal, lol! I had seen a pic once from a straight down angle and looked like it was possibly a thin, tag style sticking out bit of metal. cheers again
Really its the cylinder head that has the engine code, and i've hear of more than 1 BAM with the block being replace with an AGU bottom end (even though the internal spec's are different in standard form) Food for thought when buying a 2nd hand engine.
