seems to have turned into an e36 vs e30 thread

i like the e30....not enough to buy one. and yes i can handle rear wheel drive....done some grass track before with those raptor things vfr 400 engines. feck me they were fun :)

on a track a golf or anything else may be faster.....but we all know whats more fun to watch round a track ;)

Good advice of course, but E36 tho is nowhere near as tail happy as the E30, a far more controlable rear.

I've driven rear wheel drivers of many types & with way way more power than E30s & still one of the most tail happy in the wet is an E30 325i with an LSD, (maybe M3E30 not as bad as less midrange torque tho) however Z M coupes/cabs- - the jobbies with E30 underpinnings but E36M3Evo power, now they are worse! :p

Anyway rags- ref your post on the BMW forum, you've given GVKs car as an example & said its a 2L with'all the goodies' well its not mate, on standard cams & injection its a long way from that, the mods are a few hundred quid & the bare bhp facts are that in the form it was tracked it was only about 30bhp up on what a decent standard valver can record on the same rollers (i.e good standard= low 150's bhp) & actually I think Mallory was before his flowed head & thus only about 20 bhp over.

Ive lapped at a similar pace with various E30M3s- when I just had similar power to GVK- pre flowed head, & there was nothing in it vs a much better driver mate in a road tyred 968CS, (tho to be fair I did have track rubber on for that session which is worth a good 2 secs a lap) which is quite a bit swifter than a boggo M3E30 on a similar par to a top of the line Evo- (tho I do think a 968 is quicker but thats another story!)

A 2l with what you describe to be all the goodies would be pumping out a whole lot more grunt- in the 220bhp area, & more if you really went mad, even at list weights an early valver is sub 1000kg, 980kg I think it is & an M3 list weight is still 250kg more than that.

Agree about the E30 325i sport being a frisky little beast, mate had one of those before getting his E36 M3 Evo with Schnitzer toys, always sideways was the old E30

Remember a magazine testing the E36 when it came out and being a bit dissapointed with the handling. Journo's comments were "Hmm, with that power and layout I was expecting the handling to be like a group 4 Escort*, but it wasn't."

Rags, mine had very few toys back then. Standard 2.0 16v, coilovers, 280's on road pads, ARB's and slicks.
Spec-wise it's nothing to what it is now.

    And i didn't know the track [:D]

Alex, you know a lot about my car[:$]

As you say, at that time my car had the standard head and KR cams 170ish bhp and it was the first time we'd run the slicks and first time at Mallory, it was the fact that the M3s weren't pulling away down the straights that day that made me think that the M3s weren't as quick as I thought they should be.
