Sounds like a good idea, I'd imagine he'll be doing all the checks before he even starts doing that sort of work on it!
Those fit without a problem but the caps off cars where the cam runs in the aluminium head is a different story and still a secret
Old skool? A Blacksmith? "It's got a forged crank, forged rods, forged pistons, forged block, forged valves, forged head......... I can just see him hammering them out on the anvil.......
I see a market opening on ebay - forged pistons. Just send out lumps of scrap metal for 400 a set, "They're quite a poor forgery, but still forged....."
I was under the impression that the camshaft bearing caps and cylinder head were specific to each other. The bore is offset, hence the reason I cracked a cap when i torgued it up the wrong way round. (I know!!) The bearing is also a "white metal" insert on teh aluminium cap and head, can't remember what "white metal is" but it is added in a thick layer and machined to fit. Stop bullshi tting, if you know of a place that can replace bearing caps on the head without re boring then spill it. WTF would you want to keep that kind of info secret for?
Ok Ill tell you why I havent said how you do it. Its the sort of thing you need to be shown how to do, if I described the procedure people would just get it wrong and cause more damage. When describing how to do something its open to interpretation and without coaching how could you trust someone who is stupid enough that they fit the caps the wrong way round. If you have a look round youll find me more helpful than most when it comes to tips but sometimes a little knowledge is just too much of a bad thing. If anyone wants to be shown how then I will be only too happy to show them. There are plenty of unhelpful people on here so go spout at someone else Oh and the cams run in the parent metal and the inside of the housings are not white metal lined (where did you get that sh1t from?????), different types of head require different grades/types of ally to suit the job
