Sounds like a bargain Gary. [:D] 1996 will most likely be an OBD2. Take a piccy of the engine bay around the throttle body and ill let you know.

It's got what looks like a stepper motor type thing on the TB, I did wonder if that denotes it's OBD2...?

Big feck off cone filter (yep,I'm a muppet)

De cat pipe or make one.....remove resonator box on 2.5" Jetex system...

Baffled sump??? Who does them for VRs?

    Lightened flywheel.

It's the wrong side of 150k Luke, the people I bought it off have had it 6 years and done 60k, they bought it for six grand (got the bill of sale from when they bought it)

Mate followed me back and it doesn't smoke at all and the motor itself sounds very smooth and quiet considering the mileage.

Most cars will have done big mileage from that age, you were lucky with your Passat.

While youve got the box off are you going to put chains in or have they been done??

And no cone filter under the bonnet as it kills the power

TBH, the way I feel at the minute, I just want to fit the engine without too much stripping and farting about, if it packs up I'll get another one.

My old 2 litre lasted well even tho it used oil, with what's happened recently I say feck the rebuilt engines.

But having said that i'd be daft not to do the chains and gasket, the things that do go on the VRs...
