I agree it would cost less for a full motor than the repairs

Based on that explanation and the picture of the cam journals, I agree.

update ,not much room in engine bay so have to use the k04 turbo which turned up today, as not enough room to put a stainless manifold and big turbo as the k03 was so close to the bulkhead.ordered a solid flywheel and clutch, and just ordered an ecu remapped to 265 bhp and 288 ft/ld should be ok for a starting point ,was going to do all sorts but don't want to spend too much till its up and running so I can see how it goes ,

update so things didn't go quite as planned theres just not enough room in the engine bay for a manifold and big turbo so ive had to compromise with a few things ,I didn't put h beams or forged pistons in the bam motor as it would have just been a waste due to no being able to put a big turbo on it, so its had a new k04.the ecu is supposed to be remapped to 265bhp which in a c2 should be nippy, just a couple of bits to do and the motor can go back in,i put a solid flywheel on as the dmf are horid,

    bam

bought a bam engine had to strip it as one of the gearbox lugs on the block was cracked so I used my block and rebuilt with the bam rods, pistons and head, then bunged a k04 turbo on and I have a remapped ecu 260bhp

I went for the k04 001 It looks the same as the k03s I took off,but it is the k04 i measured the new one before fitting and it has the larger inlet as the inlet turbo pipe from the k03 is miles too small the k04 022 from the audi tt and the manifold stands out from the head too far and the k04 001 bolts straight on there are quite a few different k04 turbos
