Minor update. The location of my CAT leaves very little clearance between it and the bottom of my mk3 shifter box. Ordered all new short-shift Audi TT tower/linkage parts and a mk4 shifter setup which will give loads more clearance and a far better throw on the lever compared to my mk3 cables. I'm not sure how much shorter the throw will be compared to standard mk4 setup though, but it is shorter. Pics when I fit the kit on there. Alright Wez, how's tricks? Had a recurring elbow injury over last 13-14 months, so focused on aerobic fitness, cycling the 25mile work commute 5 days a week. Back on the weights now though.
Time for that shifter update... My exhaust system has been a problem, with clearance between the CAT and the bottom of the shifter mech housing being the major issue. I found out thtrough a mate that the mk4 cable shifter is considerably shallower, providing a much needed 40mm clearance. Combined with the 5-speed short throw Audi TT tower, this setup would also feel a million times nicer than the long swing of the mk3 cable changer. Trying to get hold of a tower on it's own from breakers proved problematic: nobody wanted to split them from the gearboxes. In the end I managed to source brand new parts through Ebay and the local Audi dealer. Parts used with the mk4 shifter cables: 1J0 711 202P Shifter relay lever 1J0 711 067L Bush x2 8N0 711 046 Shifter weight lever 02J 301 231A Shifter Housing 02J 301 233F Selector Rod Here's a comparison of mk3/mk4 cable shifters. Mk3 is a fat bugger. Audi TT tower assembled. To mount the mk4 shifter I removed the mk2 brackets under the tunnel Then I cut off two sections at the rear of the shifter as outlined in the pic below. To mount, I drilled two holes in the tunnel for the studs to be bolted up from the inside of the car then ran a bolt down at the rear. With the shifter mounted up I then setup the linkages. Once that was sorted I gave it a bash and was amazed how much more direct the shift feels and how short the throw is. A very worthwhile mod which I wish I had done on the old VR6 setup. Now it was time to refit the centre-console and trim...but it won't fit back in standard form. The inner workings of the mk4 setup sit farther foward, so I had to make something up that looked good. Basicly I trimmed a flat bit of plastic from an old centre console I had and cut the hole where it was needed. I then got the mk2 gaitor trim, removed the coin slot section and mounted this section on top of the other piece. Pretty chuffed with the result. Job done...
Nice work! I'd have tried to mount the coin holder on the back, to make it look even more subtle. I still wouldn't ever use it though
Yeh, guess something could have been done with the coin slot, but being at the wider end initally it might have been tricky to make it look 'factory' at the narrower end of the console.
I'm seldom THAT bored It's only purpose was as a dirt magnet...it's dead in the bottom of the Biffa skip now anyway
Just read though this thread, really appreciating all the hard work you've put in, I'm just coming to a close (hopefully) on an Audi 3.2 into my corrado, with a very OE based theme such as yours, and I'm equally anal about the details!! It's taken me a couple of years not working very hard on it!! Anyway just thought you might be interested in the thread, keep up the good work!! Just read the whole thread again!! I'm thinking of a 24v engine in mine after christmas. Have you ever had it on a rolling road? How much do you prefer the 24v to the 12v??
Yep, it's a bit of a shame, but I've just lost interest in the old girl. You really need a garage to have something like this, which I no longer have.
