Heel and toe

    How exactly do you do this and why is it so useful.

    At the moment I do clutchless downchanges when I'm going for it, so I have my left foot on the brake through the corner to sort out any understeer without it snapping into oversteer.

    Which technique is better?

    There was a thread on here a few munce ago about this incliding
    some videos. Also there was an audi S1 video that Green With Envy
    hosted showing some absolutly incredible footwork.

    Prefer Left foot braking myself, soon as you get used to changing gears without using the clutch it's much more fun.
    IMO the golf just has the pedals setup wrong for heel and toe.

    But left foot braking and heel and toe are different things for different purposes.

    Having read the other post I think I will stick with left foot braking and ignoring clutch.

    If you heel and toe, then you are matching the engine speed with the road speed , which is exactly what you have to do to clutchless change, and not using the clutch, you have the added bonus of your left foot being ready over the brake pedal mid corner, if you need it.

    I thought H+T was to match the engine speed to the gearbox for the next gear.
    So I use left foot for braking and use right foot to keep the throttle at the right level for the next gear.

    When I'm coming into a corner I brake with my left foot, and have my right foot over the throttle. When I need to change gear, I put light pressure on the throttle and push the lever into neutral, then blip the throttle to match the revs, and when they are right you can just push it into the next gear down, nice and smooth without the clutch.

    That way, I can stop braking the instant before I enter the corner, but my left foot remains on the pedal through the corner. If I get any understeer when I put the power down, I keep the throttle open and feather the brake pedal with my left foot to stop the understeer without any liftoff oversteer related problems.

    This technique during the corner is especially useful in the wet, and the difference it makes is astonishing.

    Just make sure you don't end up tapping the brake too hard during the corner! You end up facing the other way! :lol:

    I can move my legs easier to twist the right foot into the correct place. Hard to explain how it soes.. biut it REALLY does.

    Remember, heel and toe stops the car pitching on downchanges, keeps the car more stable under braking/going down the gears ;)

    I'm slowly getting the hang of it :lol:

    i think golf's aren't that bad actually..guess it depends on how tall you are tho. biggest prob is often the steering wheel being too close to your knees.

    no way can you break as late doin this as you could when using H&T. you'd get drive train snatch and lock the wheels.

    the second bit is true tho, and a very good technique. another one is in a high speed corner that is almost flat but not quite (due to undesteer) a quick jab of the left foot on the brake, without even lifting the throttle..just to balance the car.

    got a steering wheel spacer yet? makes it a lot easier...i have a bout a foot between the wheel and my knee's now! :lol:

    Not yet mate -- i was gonna get one off eBay but i think it's gonna go for too much now. It's at 20 now.
