It all started with leaking coolant. Bloke at the local VW garage had a look at it and said the leak could well be into the cylinders. He removed the head and sure enough the gasket had a crack and cylinder 1 had been washed clean. He patched it all up and i picked up the car today. The leak certainly seemed to be fixed, as the car started smoothly and no lights flashing at me. Got out of the garage, put my foot down, and..... no power. My Vr6 must now have about 70 bhp at best. Drove it round for a bit but no improvement, my old 1.3 Mk2 had more poke! took it straight back to the garage, and bloke was very apologetic, and i am dropping it off this evening for him to sort out. He worried me in that he seemed to be really stumped by it. Has anyone here suffered a similar massive loss of power following big engine work, and have any ideas as to what might be wrong? I want my old VR6 back! [:^(] [:^(] [:^(] Edited by: Macca
Surely he must have got the timing wrong when he put it back together? Or possibly the inlet manifold gaskets haven't sealed properly or something?
If he has had the head off, he may have not reconnected a sensor for the ECU correctly, or forgotten one completely. VW diagnostics would show a faulty code and which sensor is dodgy. Car is probably in limp home mode or whatever VW call it.
This topic will interest me. Post all the info you can i had mine on the rollers and it came back as 68bhp. It runs realy rich does yours??
No dont think its running rich. Car sounds and feels fine, apart from total lack of grunt. Faulty/disconnected ECU sensor and 'limp home mode' sound likely to me, I hope.
Lol, for some reason that was the first thought through my head, 'he's nicked my engine!' but i checked and the lump is still there
as was said, quickest and easiest thing to do would be to plug it into vag-com and see if any sensors are disconnected, so at least you could rule that out.
Got my car back but it's still fecked, and i'm still none the wiser as to what is wrong. The bloke who has done all the work has basically said he is clueless and has suggested another garage that has more knowledge. He has plugged in some digibox (like VAG.COM?), that is constantly showing a fault with the ignition timing, as far as i could understand. he has repeatedly tried to cancel the fault code, but it keeps returning. I do not have much mechanical/electrical knowledge, so sorry 1990 that i cant give more exact details. Nor do i have much legal knowledge, but this whole thing seems very wrong. He has fixed the original problem, but he has caused another one. Surely it is his responsibility to put it right, and if he can't then he should pay someone else to IMO I will be f***ing devastated if this doesnt get sorted.
Gutted for you mate. Take it to your nearest specialist and make sure he knows hes going to get the bill. Hes caused the problem so he should fix it (either himself or by paying someone else to do it). Mines in Awesome tommorrow, i'll let you know how i get on.
Apparently the diagnostic tool is showing up a fault with a Hall sensor, but being a 94 model it doesn't HAVE a hall sensor. Does this mean there is a fault with the speed sensor and/or coil pack instead? or is his mobile diagnostic tool sh!te. I would really appreciate help if anyone has any ideas I think im going to have to bite the bullet and just take it to the VW dealer. the original garage mechanic has agreed that he will pay for repairs if this new problem is due to his bad workmanship.
He seems to be a decent bloke, if i were you i would take it to someone like stealth, awesome, dubsport or midland vw. These will be more interested and will probably have more vr6 experiance than your main dealer, and will possibly be a damn site cheaper.
PeteVR6 says something about the hall sendor in this post of mine http://www.clubgti.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=865&PN=3 I think his is a 1995 though, maybe you could send him a personal message
for God's sake don't take it to the main dealer, they won't have a clue and will not give a monkeys what's wrong with it. take it to a local vw/audi specialist or better still, Stealth/Awesome Gti, etc.
that's wicked mate, read the post sounds like he knows what he's talking about, and what the problem might be. Seems like we're in this together!
