I've been in a 1991 911 Turbo, and my god it was probably the fastest thing i have been in, truly amazing.

I have also been in a 300bhp 1.8t Corrado. the corrado would have been spanked. Easily.

911s are fast, and exceptionally so off the mark, but feel faster than they are. Loads of people told me my rickety old 3.2 carrera was the fastest thing they'd ever been in. My modded G40 was quicker, again, except off the mark and over 100.

Also bear in mind the corrado is 20% heavier than a mk2 golf.

I recon the 911 would have rather nice traction with it being a 4x4.

Been in a 993 turbo and they are stupidly fast

i think your mistaken mate [:D]

the golf isn't going to touch it, yes its a quick car but its in a different league to the porsche. i had the opportunity to drive the new lamborghini, or a ferrari 355 and the guy said take the porsche its the fastest thing here. They are so astonishingly fast. and if thats the real weight of a 911 printed above i bet theres not a lot of difference between that and rich's golf.

i dunno mate, all that filler?

seriously 1590, thats about the same as a corrado 16v i believe.
take a golf stick the heavyer 1.8t in, those big heavy wheels rich runs. has he got sounds as that can really knock the weight up. i'd say its gonna be gettin close.

Richs car will weigh around 950kg, and apparently knocks out 280 odd bhp, with a torque curve to match.

    The 911 weighs 1590kg, and has 420bhp.

So, if we get them up to speed so neither gains or loses through off the line traction, we've got a golf with over 290bhp/tonne and a porsche with under 270bhp/tonne.

Off the line and up as far as maybe 40 mph the porsche will wipe out most anything, and over 100 the aerodynamics will win, but at the kind of speeds you'll acheive on your average a or b-road, the 911 won't quite have the straight line grunt to match a good 1.8t golf.

Another example: Once the low speed traction problem is solved, ie. with a syncro conversion like Ben Leach's mk1, you'll have a 900-1000 kg, 280 bhp vehicle, that'll run a 12 second quarter, absolutely in the league of the quickest 911s, despite being brick shaped. Over 30 or 40 mph, in a straight line the traction problem becomes far less relevant.

I live on a 30mph main road & class people who drive recklessly at high speeds through here (daily) as scum & i hope they wrap it around a lampost & only they get wiped out [:[].

Gotta take into account gearing as well though havent you ? [:s]

im pretty sure a 911's gearbox will have been geared to the engine has the golf?

As long as the driver is in the right gear, and not labouring or over revving the engine, and as long as the gears are sensibly spaced, then gearing isn't going to be a massive factor.

If anything it would work in favour of the little modded hatchback, as the gearing would be designed with a 130-140 mph top end in mind, not 170+, so the ratios will tend to be stacked closer together.

Onn a side note: My old 911 was hilariously long geared, and the turbos were worse, especially the oldest ones. My 3.2 would do over 45 in first, 70+ in 2nd, and so on... the early 4speed turbos were pure comedy in that regard: over 60 in first, over a ton in 2nd, 130+ in 3rd, and over 160 in 4th.(top!)
