I have an answer from Loctite regarding 270 and 271. Unadulterated!

One question which has cropped up is regarding 270 and 271:
As 270 and 271 are near identical in their properties, why two colours?
in US they like red to indicate high strength everyone else has the standard green colouring

Are 270 and 271 available in the UK/US concurrently? Were they ever?
271 available in US not 270. both are available in UK but 271 is only sold in 3ml & 24ml packs

My own question is regarding 290:
It's Green, rated only Medium/High on data sheets, and is available in the US, rated Medium.
yes 290 is available in US, breakaway torque for 290 is 30Nm. this fails around the upper limit what would normally be classed as medium strength product hence medium to high

I also sent them a copy of post #57. They did not comment. May give them a week then ask again for comments. Probably ****ed off with me for being so persistent?

That clears that up! 271 avail in the UK in 3ml = those small toothpaste tubes.

Interesting re: post 57. Maybe they agree, but are shying away from some of the US/UK quirks?

    Pic from Halfords:

So the sole purpose of these sticks is overhead?

Can any more context be put on 248 relative to 243, or do we view them as one & the same in terms of strength?

Herewith information cut from Loctite data sheets:

As I read it they are as near as damn it identical.

The problem again is that Loctite have not used identical terminology with regard to the type and condition of tests. What I find more astonishing is that the more controlled test of 248 (black nuts and bolts - degreased) gives a spread of breakloose torques, whilst the 243 test (steel nuts and bolts) quotes just one result!

I got the 'overhead' bit from an Aussie catalogue description.

    Loctite 248 Threadlocker Stick

LOCTITE 248™ provides the following product
    characteristics:
    Technology Acrylic
    Chemical Type Dimethacrylate ester
    Appearance (uncured) Blue, wax consistencyLMS
    Appearance (form) Stick
    Fluorescence Positive under UV lightLMS
Components One component - requires no mixing
    Cure Anaerobic
    Application Threadlocking
    Strength Medium
LOCTITE 248™ is a medium strength anaerobic
threadlocking material. It is supplied as a wax-like semi-solid,
conveniently packaged in a self-feeding stick applicator. As
with liquid anaerobic products, this material develops its cured
properties in the absence of air when confined between close
fitting metal surfaces. It achieves consistent strength and can
be used on a variety of metal substrates. It is particularly well
suited for applications where a liquid product may be too fluid
to stay on a part or be difficult to apply. It stores easily and
allows for direct contact to a threaded part during application to
    ensure even coverage.
    Cured for 24 hours @ 22 C
Breakloose Torque, ISO 10964, Pre-torqued to 5 Nm:
    M10 black oxide steel
    nuts and bolts (degreased)
    Nm 13 to 27

LOCTITE 243™-SG provides the following product
    characteristics:
    Technology Acrylic
    Chemical Type Dimethacrylate ester
    Appearance (uncured) Blue liquidLMS
    Fluorescence Positive under UV lightLMS
Components One component - requires no mixing
    Viscosity Medium, thixotropic
    Cure Anaerobic
    Secondary Cure Activator
    Application Threadlocking
    Strength Medium
LOCTITE 243™-SG is designed for the locking and sealing of
threaded fasteners which require normal disassembly with
standard hand tools. The product cures when confined in the
absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces and
prevents loosening and leakage from shock and vibration.
Particularly suitable for applications on less active substrates
such as stainless steel and plated surfaces, where
disassembly with hand tools is required for servicing. The
thixotropic nature of LOCTITE 243™-SG reduces the
migration of liquid product after application to the substrate.
    Cured for 24 hours @ 22 C
Breakloose Torque, ISO 10964, Pre-torqued to 5 Nm:
M10 steel nuts and bolts Nm 24
