Are those box shaped brackets not for sitting on the axle stands on?

I always wondered whether people sat mk1s on the rear chassis legs when using axle stands, but they always seemed to me to be too far up 'in' the body of the car. When I sat the car on the axle stands using those box shaped brackets it seemed logical that that was their purpose... [:s]

Andrew suggested something similar the other day. It looks like the mounts have recieved some attention from the welder, but looks a bit of a poor effort tbh.

Will be phoning Velos tomorrow, so hopefully someone there will be able to shed some light on the engine spec.

Could be right on that, or maybe just redundant brackets from the production line?

The weird thing is they just don't look strong - nothing like what's behind the front wheel arch. I've never used one for axle stands - they'd need to be really long versions.

just had a look on the jig paperwork on vwmotorsport.com for the scirocco, those brackets are used !! to measure the distance between the rear chassis legs and height above the ground.

Wow.. how much weight did all the welding add :)

Oh and btw.. make sure you have plenty of spare bulbs for your work light.. cos they dont last long.

In reality.. those lights arent a great bargain if you take into account cost of bulbs and the 1kw of power you are using.

A tube light would be better.

I'm no welder, so don't quote me on this, but I don't think it really adds any weight. With the MIG, the only thing you are consuming is the wire which weighs next to nothing. I think the welds are just created by fusing together metal which is already on the car and so not actually 'adding' any extra weight.

    Anyone know any different?

Compared to those halogens, tube lights are rubbish and I have a few already - and tbh I'm not really worried about electricity costs or saving the planet - I just want my car finished for the start of the season!

(Plus, those lights are my garage heating system too! )

Lift a spool of welding wire and you will see its not light!

re the lights.. like I said.. make sure you have plenty of bulbs to hand.. cos they dont last long.

and I mean weeks if used constantly)

Not sure what kind of wire you have been using, but the wire we buy along with most other types I have seen is not very heavy tbh.

As for the lights, thanks for the tip, but I reckon I can just about handle it. A trip to the shops for a new bulb would not be the end of the world

Hi Paul - No chance will I be ready!

Just thinking it over last night, and think I might have to put it on the back burner for a little while and just do bits as and when I have time. I have final year exams in may and need to put a little more effort into that.

May just enter the subaru wagon in a few events for the banter instead!

    the car can wait
get the exams out the way first of all. i made a bit of a mistake with not putting in some effort on uni stuff. i got it all sorted out in the end though.

if your lucky i might be able to spare some time to give you a hand at back end of may. mine should be done for then. ;)

Thanks very much for the offers guys, I may well take you up on that at some stage :)

I promised myself that I would just do it at wkends, but getting all your stuff organised for that takes up heaps of time during the week as well!

I have a 15,000 word thessis to be handed in at the end of April [xx(] , so if I make good progress with that I will crack on with the car in May.
