19 row Mocal cooler, Thermoblock sandwich plate (with temp stat to only open the oil to the cooler past 80 deg), 5/8 bsp fitments and hosing

Thanks to Alex (aposegil) for getting the stuff from Burton Power. The guy asked what engine it was for, and said 'blimey, the v8 supercharged guys normally go for the 19 row ones'

If my engine gets too hot with THAT on it, i'd be surprised

    And im mounting it here:

and cutting the bumper holes open a bit more so it gets good air flow:

When i get some oil, the ONE ONLY thing i forgot [:$]

(its gonna use another 1/2 a litre at least)

Oh, and i need to find some long thin bolts to drill into my slam panel, then theyll go down and bolt onto the cooler :)

Going to scour some DIY stores tomorrow before the londub meet and see what they have [8D]

isn't 80deg a little bit to cool for the thermostat to open?

I am only placing this assumsion on the fact that my engine oil sits between 92 and 100, but then i dont have a 1.8T engine

Fuck me that's big! Oww err.

Little 'golden' suggestion. I've always used push fit hoses but if I were you I'd get another 4 hose clips and double 'em up on all the connections. It always makes me sleep a bit better ;) .

Yeah good idea mate, 2 jubilee clips on each connection you mean?

And no, havent found the coolant leak yet, ive started wiping the engine up as its pretty filthy at the moment and its making spotting leaks pretty hard [:s]

I take it you aren't worried about overcooling the oil then? You do realise oil thats too cold is far worse than too hot oil, synthetic oil over 130 is useless but oil thats below 70 and the car driven hard causes some bad damage ! under 85 and you will be loosing performance, i take it you have a decent oil gauge before you spent out on it ?

O yeh and the oil WILL take longer to heat up, thermostat or not, the mocal sandwich plate with thermostat built in isn't exactly the best design :(

does seem odd to have an 80deg thermostat - surelly a 95/100deg would be better - keep the oil up at those temps ? [:s]

But if you've looked at the design of the mocal sandwich plate then you'll see oil can still flow through the cooler even when the thermostat is open and supposed to avoid the cooler, the entry on the thermostat is tiny so some oil is bound to flow through the cooler still, to get even decent warm up times and stable temps i've had to wrap mine in foil over the winter!

Saying that you still run a water to oil heat exchanger which should give better warm up times...

    Hi rich,

i use the same size cooler as that on my turbs, and the oil gets tooooo cold pretty quickly. I got no thermostatso what i do is tape a piece of cardboard over half of it when on trackdays . That seems to work well. When doing normal driving round town its fine

i have a mocal oil cooler as well as the std mk2 cooler, i find it takes no longer to warm up the oil than it did before i fitted the mocal cooler, havent taken it on track yet to see what the temps rise too, perhaps tubs can shed a little light on that.

Thats what i said, but its a universal stat, i couldnt find one that was anything different to 80 deg!

    Strange...
