hes on about your fuse box, is it ce1 or ce2 as all m3 have ce2 fuse boxes, so if your mk2 has a ce2 fuse box then its virtually plug and play

I have questions about coolant hoses. I want to get silicon hoses but I'm not sure if I get the ones for an ABF or for the current 8 valve?

check the hazard switch, on dash = ce1, on column = ce2.

for hoses you want mk3 abf hoses for everything on the engine, plus the heater hoses (optional, mk2 are ok but mk3 route nicer). for the radiator top, bottom and thin hose you want mk2 1.8 8v

By thin hose I'm guessing you mean the one from the expansion tank?

I had a talk with the good folks at samco and I would have to buy the hose kit for the mk2 and the mk3 to get the correct hose so I'm gonna stick with good old fashion rubber hoses, I just can't justify 300 for hose.

Why not just get it running for now. If you win the lottery you can always 'silicon up' later.

which set of hoses you need will depend a bit on which radiator you use. 16v Rad is about 10cm or so narrower, which changes the angle of some of the hoses.

Hard to say without seeing them side by side, but I think the 16v top hose starts further towards the cambelt than the 8v ones. Combined with the shorter rad, that means the top hose on the 16v is almost straight, relative to the 6" sidestep in the 8v one. If you're using a longer 8v radiator, you 'might' find an 8v Scirocco top hose is about right, as it has a smaller 'step' in the hose. I haven't lined it all up on mine yet, but I'm about to plumb in the rad on a Scirocco 16v Conversion. I'll let you know what I figure out and take some pics.

You can use your current 8 valve mounts

    Yup - same mounts.

When I've bought new hoses recently, I found Allparts did a good range of Gates hoses, which seem to be good quality. I'm sure other motor factors will stock them too.

    Lee,
For this conversion do as Jon suggested.
I will also add check the metal water pipe for corrosion.

My 1 day conversion on JORAN used all 8V vehicle hoses to connect to radiator top and botton, heater matrix and expansion bottle.

In the picture above I could have trimmed the 8v top rad hose a bit more to reduce the kink.
All works since the conversion no problem.

gad's reference car uses 8v rad hoses also.

The engine hoses for water pump output, oil cooler etc, would have been in very good nick when NatsABF owned her MK3 and should not require replacement.

Always envious when I read that lol Eddie and RJ are the ABF ninjas!

Good choice on the engine, the conversion is straight forward mechanically, I've just been having issues getting the fecker to run right.

Good luck with the conversion

yeah if you fit the 1.8 8v rad, use the matching 1.8 8v top hose. i find it fits best on the abf front flange if you flip it the other way then trim it down. the bottom hose is direct fit once you put a mk1/2 thermostat flange on the waterpump. the mk3 flange is no good as its totally different shape/fitment, it used a quick release coupling and it comes out too far for a nice fit with a mk2 hose.

mk2 1.8 8v rad is more than good enough, and new hella made ones are dirt cheap:

piccy here, note how mine sits a bit closer to the rad and no kink:
