on the mk1 chassis the body earth is on the side of the chassis leg, I dont have a decent picture of it but you should soon spot it!

with the TCI post up any part numbers if you're worried :)

edit: well saying that its possible the scirocco is different but I was pretty sure its the same as a normal mk1 tintop?

Yeah I've got a stuck sticking out my chassis leg I've used? Also TCI I've bought is part number 191 905 351B same as what I have at the moment, was just wondering if the last letter was relevant as there's lots ending in A or C that are claimed for the same engine?
Waiting for some crimps too arrive to put my new earth cables in..

Also I took my dizzy out and put a new one in, now the rotor arm does not spin [:s] And the engine sounds different like there isn't any compression? Can anyone tell me if this is something simple or if I've buggered it all up?

on the leg in a mk1 its a bolt hole not a stud, though as long as the stud is beefy and all the paint is cleaned off that will be fine as well.

191905351A, B and C are all the same part :)

Take the timing belt cover off and make sure the belt is ok!

Get a new belt on there then time up the cam and crank, get the spark plugs out and remove the cam cover then check the cams are where they should be and the pistons really are at TDC. If everything looks good get it compression tested next to see if you have any valve damage. If the pistons or cam are not lined up when the timing marks are aligned then your sprockets have slipped due to loose bolts and/or missing alignment keys.

If the belt snapped when it was turning over you might have got away without valve damage, so dont worry just yet! Very worst case all you'll need is a new head, or if you feel up to it some valves and a bit of lapping ;)

Is this going to cost more than a new engine?

if you get on all the classifieds, facebook groups, breakers etc you'll have no problem getting a decent head for a nice price. or even get a complete engine if you shop around

I got a complete 1.8 16v for 50 a few years ago, there are bargains to be had. a cheeky 2.0 16v would be nice as well, you have a good excuse ;)
