This is a classic example of Time Attack 'racers' going racing for real. I have watched a few videos from the time attack series and their driving is well below par. All you are getting is rich max power boys doing what they do in your local Tesco's car park but on track. You don't even need an ARDS to compete in Time Attack!! Thing is, i guess that if they do well in Time Attack it makes them believe they can actually go racing proper, as this proves, it's not the case! I think i am right in saying that the other Evo drivers have been racing for some time, right Bill? Funny how they didn't have the same accident!!
Read this week that for 2009, Combe Class A (4WD) cars can only be driven by drivers with National A licences, as opposed to National B licences - the latter involve no experience and a novice cross (where everyone starts from) ie Newbies. Obviously that in no way points to the fairly big accidents which we've seen, or the driver(s). Norris crash #1 - click Norris crash #2 - click Meanwhile, stumbled over these pics in a copy of Redline mag from last year. PMSL at the captions..
its sad that through the actions and inabilities of one driver that the c'ship has felt it had to create new rules to curb the speeds of class A cars, in boost control respect of motec fixed ecu's (effectively) and max of 2bar boost, as well as this no novice drivers allowed in class A. This rule was not needed, just enforcement of driving standards to the driver in question at the time(s) he had the incidents. the inception of class A has caused many problems.. not hat many years ago cossys were'nt eligible due to their power/performance potential, and the EVO's are their modern equivalent. go figure
think he was unlucky that his wheels ran up the side of the red car and launched him in the first place....although he did lokk to be going into that corner a bit hot
I take a fairly dim view of what was, and remains, a sell out by Combe's top brass. As you say, Escort Cossies weren't eligible in the past. Neither were Skylines. Then along came other turbo 4WD cars which hadn't been seen coming, and somewhere someone took a decision that it was a good spectacle, and to run with it. What was a 450 bhp ceiling in 2005/6 is now 550bhp+, and no one with a N/A car has a look in. Wouldn't want to get blinkered and be a stickler for the past, so things change, move forward etc, and it was never going to stay a high profile c/ship by letting the spectacle that was the N/A 205/206/Astra cars versus Rover Turbo Coupe run and run. But some reg changes could have been thought out. I actually think that the whole thing - illustrated by Norris, but replicable by anyone else - 550bhp and road tyres, is simply dangerous now. And limiting the boost to 2 bar in 2009 as I mentioned was repoted the other day, will do nothing at all. And of course, it's just a minefield for cheating anyway - boost limits, c'mon, who are they kidding?
he hit a back marker by sliding into them.... luck was'nt a factor, Red mist was and inexperience in a high powreed missile
