Very true - but faster doesnt mean better ;)

Being a spectator/fan of motorsport is all about the spectacle, not just raw lap/stage times.

Finest race lap..but I have read several accounts of how his qualifying lap for Monaco in 88 (McLaren MP4/4) was awe inspiring. He was on Pole from Prost in the sister McLaren by 1.5 seconds!!! :o

Senna took pole in Monaco that year by 1.4s and later said that he felt he was `outside the car` on his qualifying run.

It was a shame that he went out on lap 66 the tunnel.

He then got out of the car (without informing the McLaren team what had happened, causing tension in the pits) and walked home as he only lived about 600ft away.

He then went for a bath and watched the rest of the GP on TV :)

That's typical Senna that, I love the way he didnt care about anything but racing

not only was he the fastest driver in the world, he actually ahd a personality too! Not like the Schumachers and Hakkinens of this world [8(]

Can anyone remember reading CCC in late 80s when Senna went to wales and drove a few rally cars for a magazine feature?

From memory he drove a 6R4 , mk2 Golf GTI, Sierra Cosworth prolly others too and was quick from the word go. [:D]

natural talent its called. i.e. can be quick without trying, without learning the car or the track, just turn the key and be fast. [:D]

    Senna = God.

    Yes, I remember that [:D] [:D] [:D]

Senna wasnt just a driver, Senna was F1 and continues, in my opinion, to be so even today.

Speaking of drivers being naturally gifted/quick Jeff, I have some footage of Jackie Stewart in a works prepared Mk2 Escort rally car

I've got that CCC somewhere. The article was written by Russel Bulgin (my favourite motoring writer, sadly deceased [:^(] ).

*looks around and sees stacks and stacks of magazines, wonders which pile it's in then realises it'd take three days to find so decides not to bother*

Ah - I`m watching loads of my old footage now.

Damn you lot making me reminisce

Without a doubt my two all time F1 greats are Ayrton Senna (Ayrton Senna Da Silva, being picky [:$]) and Gilles Villeneuve [:D]

Prost was the man for me...

Maybe not so quick as Senna..(unless it was the French GP) but such a smooth & elegant style & without doubt the thinking mans driver..

First saw him race at Brands in 86 & was my hero thereafter..even managed to get his Autograph at Silverstone in 93!!

It says a lot that Prost was the ONLY driver Senna ever cared about beating...& that on his day Prost could make Senna look ordinary...(France 88, Portugal 88 Spain 88 & especially Japan 89..

I thought that was Prosts best ever drive. Left Senna 4 seconds down the road & totally unable to catch him.

Even when Senna got close in traffic you could see there was no way he was going to pull off a legitimate manouvre.

As it was, Senna dived down the inside at the chicane (with 2 wheels over the pit lane yellow line---FORBIDDEN in the drivers morning briefing) & would never have made it through the chicane...but Prost had already turned in...

Prost definitely had him beaten that day...& it showed up in Sennas desperate driving...

Since Sennas passing, Prost has even said that Senna had called him not long before he died & asked him to return to F1 as he had no challenge without him..

Are you referring to the infamous (or ONE of the infamous  ) Suzuka incidents ?

The thing is, the Professor was a more elegant driver but Senna had that indefinable quality that set him apart and a raw determination to be the best at all costs.

Dont forget that Prost feared Senna too though, he didnt want Senna to be a team-mate at Williams for a reason. Though I`m sure a Prost fan would disagree.

Prost was a supremely talented driver but Senna was an entertaining supremely talented driver.

When he was racing, I wanted to watch. Its that simple.

The Senna video won't play on my computer, it opens up and I can see it's 2.54 mins long, and I can see freeze frames if I move the bar along but it won't play it as a video.Anyone know what codec it is, or what else it could be [:s]
