Thanks for the comment Well, it's been out of my procession for the last 4 years so i'm trying to catch up and do the bits i wanted to do originally. This winter i'm planning on renewing the running gear: Powder coat New polybushes New bolts throughout Rear disc conversion Porsche front brake conversion Should be fun
Bit more of an update and some pretty decent progress thanks to the future father in law The amp should do for now but already scoping out another one and also deciding on a sub after the original one came back damaged The carpet has been ordered The seat frames have been ordered (oh yeah, new seats are almost ready to go in) And passed it's MOT this week Prep for Stonor seems to be going well
Woo, finally won at splitting the OZ Vega and now just waiting to see when i can drop them off for welding, drilling, new dishes, new nuts and bolts and powder coat And with it being Stonor Show over the weekend, saturday was spent cleaning the beast Snapped cruising to the show And parked up
Nearly got the false floor all finished. The enclosure still needs a bit of tweaking but everything is in place and covered. The rear section for the enclosure needs recovering because i was an inpatient idiot and stuck the wrong side down ... whoops Also removed the Porsche Tombstones and replaced with some Cobra Monaco S buckets (The tombstones are on eBay now) A few more bits to finish with the interior now: Trim the door cards properly Finish sub enclosure and cover again Potentially fit a roll cage
Went along to Vag At The Manor with BPC Retro last weekend but unfortunately didn't stay long due to lack of sleep Here's a few stolen snaps Might have done another buy as well so fingers crossed they'll be here tomorrow
A quick update on this one Purchased the new wheels Recently refurbished BBS RM 15x6.5 painted in BBS gold, mirror polished lips and new chrome bolts I know they have been done to death but they are chosen for a reason Eventually the lips will be replaced some wider options but for now i've got my eye on other things Also, the new brake discs arrived to see how much needs to be machined off the current adapters Also picked up an SWG full length rain tray to tidy the bay up a little more Very happy with the fit and finish I mentioned about that i've got my eye on something, well that's what i'm going to be looking at this weekend Something a little bit tasty for the engine bay
Headed out for a drive on a great sunny day through some awesome country roads There was also another reason for this. To meet up with this guy.. I've had a soft spot for this Mk1 since first seeing it on the cover of PVW for Mk1 Madness and today was lucky enough to get a passenger ride. It handled as well as it looks and driving mine back seemed disappointing - It's set the bench mark for how i want mine to handle now And the noisy bit A few of you will recognise this from either shows or PVW An ABF 2036cc Mahle Pistons Balanced and lightened bottom end Jenvey DTH ITB's on OMEX management etc etc The power delivery, noise and feel of this was amazing - grinning like an idiot throughout the whole drive After this.. Some changes coming soon to mine Also on the way there i was papped by a local VW group
The swg cover looks cool, would look good texturised and satin black. Is there a build thread for that mk1 anywhere?
Not that i know of. The article in PVW said the builder stayed away from forums so it's only what people have posted from seeing at shows or track days I will texture the rain tray eventually, for now just enjoying getting to drive it Collection date has been agreed for the next chapter in this ones history More parts collecting again
Yours should handle as good if setup right. It's already sitting low so just needs decent tyres and a thick rear ARB (probably 25mm but 28mm would be better) for a cheap/easy upgrade. You'll be surprised how much improvement a rear ARB makes while still keeping the ride comfortable. Cheers Paul
Upgraded ARB's are definitely on the long shopping list The coilovers are crappy JOM ones (If i remember correctly) and need to replace the top mounts soon but going to wait until winter now to still enjoy the weather and show season That's the problem with mine, it's not set up properly - ideally needs all tracking, camber etc set so going to get in touch with J-tech and see what they can do Winter plans are: Freshen up running gear Rear disc conversion Upgrade ARBs Convert to cable shift box Install new engine Attempt to tidy the bay a little more (5 years of daily driving has taken it's toll and some paint has started to crack in places but that's mostly due to poor prep work) I've been doing some research into new coilovers and was very impressed with the KW V2's but been looking at the BC Racing set ups I saw a post from Toyotec saying that most people run them so i'm assuming they're a pretty decent choice
Thanks for the comments Unfortunately, bit of a kicker - the new engine is a no go and very disappointed so onwards to getting the brain thinking. I have a bored ABF empty block that could possibly be built over time to a similar (if not better) spec than the engine i was planning on buying. I need to measure the bore again but pretty sure it's only been a 1mm overbore What would be the best piston option for running ITB's? Could 2e Rods be used or is it worth replacing them with the new pistons? I'm off to research this now
So, after spending the day in a van (and thanks to magneticrob) I now have a few more pieces to the new engine puzzle Omex600 management and loom And attached to this was a rebuilt, bored out, lightened ABF with Wossner internals and gearbox Next on the list for purchase is: Jenvey DTH ITB's Injectors Throttle linkage And the other usual bits needed More pics to follow as more happens but first off is to tidy up the block and replace the rocker cover. The current one has been modded for a throttle cable mount (bike carb converted) Luckily have a spare one so just needs tidying up
Very nice! Im hoping mine will be on par with yours. Looking forward to seeing how you progress. Great work mate.
Thanks for that buddy - i've been following yours for a while now and looking forward to more updates Here's a quick pic of the new motor Bored, skimmed, rebuilt, Wossner internals and finished with stainless fixings so should be fun Luckily had a spare rocker cover laying around so swapped out the modded red one for the fresh black Personally think it looks heaps better already and thinking or adding silver accents to the fins. Just needs a quick tidy up and then starting the shopping list for the ITB conversion. Choices are either Jenvey DTH or a friend has suggested a local company called Pulse which requires a manifold (i think) What are the pros and cons of using DTH or manifold fitted ITBs?
Appreciated, thankyou. Its been a while, but I'm back on it now. Looking forward to seeing how your engine performs. I'm sure someone will come along and give you a detailed answer about the differences between both types. I was lucky and bought my Jenvey set-up from a guy on here some time ago.
I think i'm going to stick with the DTH route for this Today managed to get little bits done but nothing too major Added the silver fins and started tidying up the head Took the RMs to get new rubber and noticed that one of the valve holes has been drilled out so no new tyres today. Fingers crossed for tomorrow after doing a quick alteration to the other 3 rims Polybushes have started turning up so need to start taking apart the spare running gear i've been accumulating over the last few months. Then it's onto freshening up and getting them ready for a straight swap with the current gear Made a start on the gearbox as well From This - To this: Not completely there but it's a start at least and as soon as funds allow there will be some sort of diff fitted to make better use of the power
Had to drill out the valve holes and running stubby rubber type valves instead of the stainless ones i bought but at least the tyres are on and now fitted to the car. 195 50 15 Toyo Proxes The rears are on 20mm spacers and might add 10mm up front Also the suspension needs to come up slightly so as not to catch on the tyres Very happy with them already
