could someone with one of these engines please tell me whether they get
a vacuum on the pipe on the air intake box (the pipe which connects
from the bottom of the airbox to the warm air flap) when they engine is
    hot.

sorry for a nearly replicated thread but i need this car on the road

o how i love them yet hate them at the same time [:^(]

Yuh they should have vacuum pretty much all the time, regardless of how hot the engine is :)

For now can you not get an adaptor on the pipe to join the 2 together, or bodge the flap open about half way with a screw through the housing?

there are any other methods of warming the carb on this engine...im
certain i have carb icing but am unsure how to fix it

Well as long as the inlet manifold preheater is connected up, as well as making sure it gets good coolant flow to the choke unit that should be enough

The warm air feed IS important though, with mine disconnected I get carb icing. I also got icing when the metal manifold plate thing was removed (sheared bolts) it isn't enough to have the pipe dangling down there :)

Check you get 12v to the inlet preheater with the engine cold and the ignition on :)

could you tell me where i can locate the pre heater and perhaps what it looks like?

The pre-heater is bolted into the bottom of the inlet manifold under the carb, it will have a thick wire coming out of it. Check it gets 12v, and that the heater passes current (1 multimeter prong on the plug, the other on the manifold body somewhere)

ive changed this temp regulator but its not made a blind bit of difference!

when u talk about coolant flow to the carb and carb pre heaters...i
cant seem to find any of these on my carb, its a 1300 carb
(solex)...will this carb have these components?

It would appear not according to the Haynes manual. So the warm air flap still doesn't open? Do you get vacuum to the pipes connected to it?

no the warm up flap now opens with the vacuum from the back of the carb

i think a new carb is in order, does anyone know where i can get a
replacement for it (1300 carb)....or better still a second hand weber
    that will fit?

Does the warm air hose connect to a shroud around the exhaust manifold?

Why do you think you are getting carb Icing? What are the problems that you have?

well after 5miles of driving, the carb splutters and then stalls, if i
leave it for a few minutes start it again, i can drive normally again
til the same problem occurs...this is the only logical solution i can
come up with....ive tried everything else people have suggested

yeah the warm air pipe is connected

Sounds like the fuel pump then, my dads 1.3 would cut out randomly on long jorneys. The last time we broke down the AA man correctly diagnosed a lazy fuel pump ;)

Replace the air & fuel filters if you havent already done so, and start looking at the leads, dizzy cap & rotor arm. My girlfriends AX would cut out very easily whenever a load was placed on the engine, new dizzy cap & rotor arm sorted it

Well, mine ws originally a 1300.
I had problems with it stalling and not running right etc. It turned out that the rubber mounting that the carb sits on was split along its rear edge. I suppose after 5 mins, the rubber was warming up and softening a little, allowing the carb to rock, causing the split to gape and letting the engine suck in too much air.

Have suggested this to others who have also found splits...
