Reliability (never failed to get from A to B in my 4-ish years of ownership) and fuel economy, mainly.

    Try 3 years

I see it nearly every day and I'd never get rid of it, so the love is still there, I think I've just totally forgotten how good it is/was to drive.

Since the Golf came off the road I've had a Mondeo (which was a great car tbf), an Audi Coupe (which looked cool but was dull as dishwater), a Fiesta, an Escort Van and now I'm in a 106 [8(]

When I first got it my mates said "You've even got a cool key!!!"

Now, everytime I walk up to my car looking at it I think "hell yeah"
Then when I sit in it I think "hell yeah"
When I start it and listen I think "hell yeah"
Everything pretty much goes on like that [:D]

Always puts one of these [:D] on my face!

The Mk2 golf is one of my favorite cars of all time. Don't think I could go without one. I have always had a mk2 golf of one type or another for over 10 years now. Now I got 2 of the things with a possible third on the way. They seem to be breeding on my driveway

i love the way it drives, i love the way it sounds, i love how it handles like it is on rails, i love how i can either thrash it or drive like a granny and still get good mpg. and of course because it puts a dirty great smile on my face whenever i drive it!

I love the fact that when it breaks & I can't fix it someone (usually DanTbone) from the club will come and mend it for me.

The mk2 for me feels like the perfect balance between older lightweight hot hatches and newer lardy cars. It was never really the same from the early 90's on when the mk3 came in.

I just love the way they were so brilliantly engineered and built to last. I am amazed how often I work on other makes of car and come accross something difficult which was never an issue with a mk2 because of the thought put into the design.

    Mk2's were built to last!

HA! 16v exhaust manifold nuts, 16v downpipes that can't be removed without dropping the subframe, the way the front bumper also holds the engine in and never lines up properly when refitting it. Just off the top of my head [:p]

Mine was made for me and never will we be parted. I agree with the comments. On a really bad day, once I get mine out it is smiles all the way. Himself cannot believe something so simple can transform me. Nothing else quite does it for you and the statement is I DO NOT WANT A NEW CAR ANYONE CAN HAVE ONE but this is my choice. Lucky aren't we?

And how the wheel arch trims hold in the damp and rust the arches, And what about the 8v exhaust manifold they're fun :p

No but all cars have bits that are a pain in the a*s. The mk2 has them as well. Still one of the easiest cars I have worked on though.

Ive always been in ownership of a MK2 since i was 15, now 24.

The MK2 as a whole has been a major part of my driving life tbh, and i really couldn't do without one.
Only a fellow enthusiast will understand, like us CGTIers. Other people look at you as if your mad!!!

The whole look of the MK2 sums it up for me. You cant beat a standard looking MK2 GTI, big bumper 3dr models being my favorite! And the 4 lamp grill of course...

They are so easy to work on to and there is so much you can do tuning wise.

Also MK2's, in my eyes, dont seem to age as much as other cars of similar age...

MK2 Golfs - Greatest hothatch ever made...
