I've got one the same as you, but haven't a clue about how fast it is. Done a few bits to it, but mostly cosmetic stuff.

To be honest to make the driver a gti 8V kinda performer it would cost a lot of money, and then when u came to reselling basically u got a driver with gti power not a gti, which in eyes of a lot of buyers is what they will see.

    Wiv a cam?

Fit a GTI cam to a driver and you turn it into a flame spitting, driveshaft twisting, tarmac chewing monster

    Apparently ;)

my old 1.6 gave a few standard 8v GTi's a scare! doesnt cost that much either

started off by fitting GTi cam which i got for free [:D] then GTi manifold and downpipe which didnt cost that much along with the Jetex exhaust, then got the weber which is quite costly but am sure you can buy 2nd hand, gave it a good service with new plugs, leads, dizzy, oil etc etc got all setup on the rolling road and gave quite respectable power!

A gti cam will give good results.
Whatever you do with it just don't put a gti badge on it

why dont you put your standard 1.6 against a modded 1.6 (cam webber gti exhaust etc.) on a quarter mile an see how fast in comparison. Or try to see a modded 1.6 against a gti and watch that (not that itll be much fun for the 1.6) Inters mite provide the opportunity to see it on their 1/4 mile. just a suggestion

A Mk2 Driver could easily be as fast as an 8v GTI but then again an 8v GTI isn't fast so your never gonna have a fast Driver! :p I had an old 1.3 Mk2 which my old man stuck a GTI engine in with pooty carb off the 1.3 so basically turnt it into a 1.8 driver with GTI internals and it was deffinately more lively then my 8v DIGI Mk2 GTI. Anyway if you wanna go fast get a 16v...fullstop! ;) [:D]
