and still slower than tub's car... although i think that fthaimike's car should be a good comparison to my pretty much stock gti
Hello J Man, if you modify your car AND tell your insurers (like you should... ) then you may well find the insurance is similar as for a standard 8V GTi. My driver has a 2 litre TSR engine, lowered, big bumpers, GTi front brakes, and other subtle mods and the insurance is very similar to a GTi 8 V. I told my insurers every detail, even down to the gear knob. Cheers, Stevehttp://www.thepimp.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/golf%20front.jpg[/ IMG]
Mine did the 1/4 at inters last year with full interior and a load of extra stuff at about 17.6 (I think) Richgits 1.6 with/wiv a cam and a weber was about 1 or 2 car length behind mine at the end. So, cam and weber adds the best part of the difference between a 1.6 and a 1.8 driver. A stripped out driver with tyres and suspension setup properly can get in the low 17's which is the worse side of a 8v gti's time.
I'd go with the majority here and not bother tuning a driver, i spent to much cash on my old heap over 4 years with a weber carb and bits(well i thought it was great then , and yes everybody has to start somewhere) Best bet is upgrade the chassis and when you can afford a GTI, swap it round. Sell the driver with all the GTI bits on and your laughing. That's what i did anyway after i got told for the upteenth time that it aint worth the cash tuning a driver! Edited by: sife1
this forum is filling up with: don't bother with a driver don't bother with a 8v GTi don't bother with a 16v, get a 20VT. i say: don't bother posting this kind of crap!
there should be a new forum for talk about drivers. you lot seem to forget that for some of us its our only option due to such high insurance! [:^(]
I don`t mid talking about driver`s, may buy one next year if my f**king insurance doesn`t go down (30 extra for a set of cams, tw@t`s!).
I was going to put up a follow up but it would be unfair on the people I got better times to. Mine was stripped out and I had had a lot more practise on 1/4 miles.
A 1.6 mk2 golf is a quality first car! If its good enough for me! Its also perfectly quick enough for a novice like myself, I reckon i`ll see 0-60 in 10 with a filter/exhaust. If anyone would like to pay part of my insurance i`d love to get a GTi though!
My little 1.6 is nippy enough, runs 77bhp atw, and 103bhp atfw, ain't got a stainless steel exhaust system yet, and i want to go to injection. for an 18 yr old lad wanting abit of fun, you can't beat them! I've told my insurance company about all my mods, they didn't care.
i told mine too 1 aluminium tax disc holder, they didnt seem to care nah i am with direct line, if i put some alloys on they wont insure me!!! ba***rds. ahh ill put em on anyway, when i get some that is!
I told my insurance company about the ported and polished head, gti cam, weber carb, alloys, big bumpers, arial, seats, the lot.
i started with a 1.6 driver... put a abf in it now tho.. was a ok lump, 61k on the clock.. but i ended up getting so ****ed off with it.
i bought a mk2 gti 8v the other day, the guy was horrified when i came to buy his car, i turnt up in a mk3 1.4 and he didnt understand why i was buying and older car some people these days, dont know style when its sat in there from garden ... litrally
