Returning to this exciting topic... , what kind of fuel consumption do people get out of their 1.9 tdi motors when driven hard? As mentioned in my last post, the Bora 110 tdi I hired last week only returned 35mpg over 600+ miles of varied roads. Anyone? (real distance/fuel bill figures, not MFA type numbers pls.)
Well, I was surprised by your post I have to admit. Over 18,000 miles my Audi A4 TDI PD 115 has averaged 49.3 mpg. (This is not computer figures, but tank to tank comparisions. Out of interest the computer in the Audi is pretty good, about 1-3% optimistic, depending on where I get my fuel oddly enough) On a long motorway cruise at 70mph I get 62 mpg Round town I get about 47mpg. Hoofing it about I struggle to get it into the 30s, usually around 42mpg. And this is driving quick enough to keep pace with mk2/mk3 8v GTIs on full bore. I did one track day with it (SE suspension, not good!) and got 28mpg. My Mk1 GTI average 9mpg! The PD engines with 115/130 seem to be the best in terms of compromise between economy and performance. The 150 is noticeably less economical. The pre PD engines are not as efficient either (eg. Your 110) Cheers, Drew. Edited by: drew
we were hoofing it Drew (for 90, read 90+), he normally gets around 50ish, I used that exanmple as it gave an interesting direct comparison over exactly same roads at exactly the same speeds. James.
I must be a proper leadfoot then , diesel efficiency obviously can't mask that completely. I think it would be fair to say that a relaxed driver reaps the benefits of diesel characteristics far more, both in delivery of performance and MPG. Loonies like me (get in, place housebrick on right hand pedal) close the gap a bit I suppose.
I'm only assuming this was a 110 as it was a base model Bora diesel, - it was a 2004 model, so is this a correct assumption, or am I mistaken?? edit- did the obvious and checked the vw site- OMG it must have been a 100. no wonder I'm still waiting for it to hit 130km/h on the autoroute, two days after handing back the keys Edited by: jbmg40
Maybe you would beat him, maybe you wouldn't, whichever way it would be closer than most VR6 drivers care to contemplate. TDI 150 pulls like the proverbial train, once you're ahead the smokescreen seriously slows the opposition down.....
Yes, it would have been a 100. A bit underpowered for that kind of thing, hence the economy would suffer! The 130 would have been a lot better! Cheers, Drew.
It does surprise me that they bother making the 100ps version, the worst problem I had with it was that you really had to blip the throttle a bit to get on boost in order to pull away uphill etc, which, if you got it anything other than spot on, meant either spinning and squealing embarrasingly, or bogging down equally embarrasingly
This is a bit of an achilles heel with the TDIs, start technique can be tricky. I tend to do more clutching slipping than with a petrol. Cheers, Drew.
