Right, it's about bloody time that somebody put this to the test.

Discussing it for the next 14 years won't help at all.

    We need a solid conclusion.

Well as demonstrated in DB's video we firstly need a bit of public road to have a good race on.

I'm willing as the 115 TDi driver, just need a standard 8v now...

Did make me laugh when I read that this morning

The rust is just the disguise to put people off and them holes in it are just Precision performance lightened rust holes...helps the power to weight ratio...[:s] [:D]

Just went on the 1/4 calculator and using the data from parkers for a mk4 115 tdi it came up with an error message:

'Invalid Entry : Power to Weight Ratio must be between 95 and 700 BHP/Ton'

Thats using a power figure of 115hp with a weight of 1237kg

Even when I put the weight in at 1200kg the calculator comes up with a 1/4 mile in 19secs

Quite good really and realistic to a certain point. Says my car should have a faster 0-60 than it actually does however [:$] but the 1/4 mile time was spot on.

That calculator puts mine at 5 seconds dead.

    That's a bit ambitious,...................maybe 5.3 ;)

    lmao!

Today he came out with he's been reading his manual and his 0-60 time is actually 6.8secs .

I had to bite my lip not to laugh.

Hopefully winning some new wheels and some good rubber tomorrow so will be able to put power to the floor much better. woohoo!

Round a track (or B road) each incarnation of the gti is gradually quicker then the previous. a mk3 GTI 16v is faster then a mk2 GTI 16v for example. A mk4 GTI 150 is faster then a mk3 GTI 16v. As for the Top Gear Video, it is made for TV and carefully planned. A bit like the shi tty video on youtube where a mk4 anniversary 180 is nailed by a Rover, they had the producer drive the golf and slow on purpose because they had been ill-informed that mk4 gti's are slow due to the gay 115bhp model. Had to fix the video when they realised that an anniversary is rather fast.

Your race sounds like a good one but I think the mk2 is faster personnaly, but it really would be down to driver.

Yeah I forgot about these added luxuries we didn't have to pay any extra for....

I thought the MK3 GTi was built so heavy it didn't even move?

Considering the MK3 16V has 118bhp/ton and the MK2 16V has a whopping 143bhp/ton I think you'll find the MK3 will have its ass handed to it.

Even today, (with the exception of special editions like the MK2 16V TTechnics, Rallye, G60 Ltd) the MK2 16V is second only to the new MKV GTI which has about 155bhp/ton and this was confirmed by VW not so long back. (The MKV GTI Launch to be exact.)

See even that knows the mk4 weigh more than boeing 747's!

Have re-taken a test with a friend and I know after 2 runs that my 16v - 166bhp (modified some-what but looks standard;) ) keeps up with a bog standard mk4 v6motion thingy 205bhp - and there is a difference of 35-40bhp there (and 4 wheel drive!) - so that gives you an idea of the extra bhp needed for a mk4 to beat a mk2. Given this test me and my friend have now taken twice I would put my money on a mk2 8v beating both tdi mk4s. ;)

Righty well it has been decided!

Managed to have a wee race on the way home today as for some reason the other guy came my way, but anyways the MK2 8v lost against my GT TDi 115!:p

We we're both turning left at a round about, i was in front, so I waited for a big space to make sure he would get out behind me, sure enough he did! He might of been couple of car lengths away from the off on the roundabout but once we were both clear and accelerating away he was dropping behind quickly. I only accelerated up to 90 then started slowing for some traffic. This was on a dual carriage way by the way.

Funny thing is 20 mins after I had won he started texting me then in his 2nd text he said "Just remember you have 11 years on me" referring to the cars age! What an excuse:clap:

Good on you. Not the racing mind, that's punishable by death.
