I did a temporary repair on my mk2 fuel tank with a hot glue gun. The filler neck was cut by some twat I let work on it. Think it was about 2 years later I finally got round to replacing the tank.

Good shout on glue gun, mine has hole drilled in it, modern scrapyard norm, de-pollution when car comes in.
I have a mk2 tank that can cut a piece out and see if can plastic weld in at some point in future, seems a waste throwing the mk3 tank as getting rarer now and the spare one was going to another member for his conversion but I've had to use it on mine.

Interestingly it has similarities with metal welding. You can do a basic job with a HDPE welding rod and the iron or hot air gun type plastic welding tools, but ultimately nitrogen gas is required to prevent oxidisation of the plastic.

If it's a perfectly round neat drill hole, is there anyway you could put something through it. Can you get to it from inside, through the sender opening?
Say a stainless bolt with a large flat washer and a nylon sealing washer or something and a nut on the outside or perhaps even fit a drain tap?

Motorbike, in particular motocross people might be worth getting a 2nd opinion from. Most motocross bikes have plastic tanks unlike the metal tanks on a lot of road bikes. There must be a market for repairing them.

Did consider trying a bolt and seal washer in there, and there are a few motorbike specialists in town, may be worth a chat.

Quick update, found oil collar and the rear cover bracket, extension is now sorted, but the bracket now wont fit due to the coil pack adaptor plates so looks like another engineering resolution required.

What's the part number on the oil collar? I can't seem to find it listed and presumably it would be ideal for pouring from a full can of oil.

It's only the standard thing, 6, 11 and 12, extending the neck up to the plastic cover, most 1.8t have them and probably more.

Cheers Dave. Clearly I was in the wrong section. Seems they only tend to come with a rocker cover on ebay which might be useful if I hadn't already cleaned and refitted the existing one.

@Finite It just twists in like a normal oil cap, was going to run without the cover, but thinking about it I've not got a showy engine so had to find it again, may be able to get another if you after one, just let me know.

Cheers, I'm not in a rush. I only want it for temporary filling use at the next oil change.

06a103179b is £10+VAT from the dealer, our PD Bora has one as well 038115301B 12.87+VAT though not quite as tall. just get a funnel tbh if you're only going to use it for oil fills

an old bottle with the bottom cut off is a good emergency funnel. I still have an old redline MTL gearbox oil bottle I use for filling all my gearboxes

Today the golf has moved under it's own power, great point in the swap. Ok, only across the drive to another spot, but its mobile!
Changed the hose between brake master cylinder reservoir and clutch cylinder inside, it had started to weep fluid through its exterior, obviously not as stated in description, heat proofing on wiring loom and the leaking vac pipe on breather blocked for now until replacement is sorted.
Going to list the bits still to do in a while.

Great stuff Dave, must be a good feeling. How did you fit those brakes behind those wheels without spacers? They don't look much shallower than our wheels?

To do list, probably more but its reference for me.
    Bleed clutch and brakes again.
    Fit microswitch as clutch switch,
Fix wiring back securely in engine bay,
Mount ECU in scuttle, think will use fabia one on bracket,
Mount the MAF and air filter somehow, suggestions welcome.
Adapt lights on relay from mk3,
Wire auxiliary pump in, relay arrived today,
Dash to reassemble properly, ( no lower panels on) and interior trim to clip back over fuel pump wiring.
Clips and a guard for fuel lines to filter under car.
    Exhaust blows near turbo,
Grille to fit, stripes to remove bumper to replace.

Sure will extend this when start delving into it.

Was good to actually drive it, started it mayday weekend, engine out so around 3 months, loom went back in fathers day. Then it's been waiting for intercooler pipe, and all the bits and pieces that need addressing.
Clutch pedal is very low to floor and brakes a little spongy, will bleed manually over weekend just to be sure, and probably get wiring sorted.
It's been a juggling act with work, weather and home life, whereas I think taking a while it's not too bad really I suppose.

Very pleased, when it started straight away with the loom in, that was great, then getting other bits sorted to be able to move it was good.
Needed 5mm spacers to clear, could have gone 3mm but had these already.

@rubjonny cheers John. I'd love to have live prices again and ditch my legacy VMs. I did use the ubiquitous HDPE milk carton cut down, but the wind caught it. I guess I could work around that, but I like the OEM bit being compact and working regardless of the engine cover being on or off.

Dave are you sorted for a breather hose? I have one going spare here after getting a china special replacement set and sticking with the Topran one I bought previously.

@Finite, Thanks, I had a look yesterday, I've blocked the vac pipe for now, car idled better, and saw the elbow from the oil filter was shot too, so ordered a kit off Ebay about midnight, was cheap one but hopefully will sort it until I decided if delete bits or catch can route. Cheers though.
