Thats coming along nicley could you post a pic when you have fitted the tank of the filler position i hear they can be slightly out of position compaired to the mk2 tank.
one thing, the MK3 rubber surround is a different part number to mk2, maybe its just the way it sits in the filler hole? i was planning to pinch one from scrappy to compare
OK here's the mk3 filler surround. Compared to the Mk2 surround (left) Mk3 surround fitted - it doesn't align. Mk2 surround fitted - seems fine. (ignore gaps around edge - i hadn't fitted the metal sprung band) Looking up: The Mk2 neck attaches with 2x screws however the mk3 neck with only one - but being awkward I wanted to use the position nearest the shock/strut - so I drilled out the blank and made my own hole. The Mk3 tank has a vent which is taken with a clear hose to the carbon canister under the bonnet however the Mk2 isn't set up to accommodate this. I'm going to tie wrap the vent to the filler neck and reroute it up to the filler surround which on the Mk2 has a vent valve. In fact - I think the vent connects at /near the filler cap so should be easy to adapt and connect to the said vent.
cool that put paid to that idea and saves me a trip to scrappy! let us know what you do about the carbon canister line, i have a vague plan in my head to swap over mk2 bits till it fits the same as a mk2 tank but be nice to have more infos. ditto about the 1 hole thing i saw that too, i know one of my bolts in the bracket is sheared off so i was willing to bet it would of course be the one i need for the mk3 tank so a hole was going to be required in my mk3 neck
Seemingly endless string of little jobs...........but i'm knocking them down one by one. Been under the car checking stoneguard and found a few small breaches - where the silencer hangers are, under the heat shield, a bit on the end of the floor pan extension fins, and a couple of other small bits. I use a sharp chisel to shave off the rubber then use wirebrush fitted to grinder to prepare and smooth the area. Application of rust eater then let that do it's trick - a wipe with 60 grit to key, then paint on hammerite rust primer (thick light grey paint). Will then spray stoneguard to seal the areas, and some waxoyle for good measure. Given up trying to find a used cable change bracket for my gearbox, so bought a new one. The TT shift cables fit fine and the 6-speed shifter works fine with the 5-speed transmission. The gearbox was degreased then hit it hard with jetwasher.....ready for wire brush and a coat of paint.
New rear beam rebuild.....new brake dustguards....new stub axle bolts .....new brake lines.....goodridge hoses.....polybushing
Final stages of rebuilding.....goodridge hoses fitted. Axle is darn heavy when built up!! Mounted ready to finish bolting up.........can't get axle bolts in to the hangers - the brake hoses are in the way!
Looking great :-) Same gearbox code as mine (good choice of ratio's) are those early mk2 rear calipers? they don't look very familiar to me tbh! but look good all the same.
Cheers TT. I waited some time to find that gearbox - yerr VR6 ratios in a 4-pot housing. Ibiza Cupra-R. 99/00. The rear calipers are regular Golf mk2 AFAIK. 38mm piston. I bought them in really good condition - Supposedly near new.
yes they are really good ratio's (imho) but i still got 5th gear wheel spin in 5th @ 80 mph in the wet the other day (simlar set up as yours) and thats a GPS figure. 3rd and 4th are awesome in the dry but premote grip,2nd is still a struggle unless super grippy tyres are fitted.
I really want to get the 1,8T up and running, but I couldn't go straight to the money shot without getting all the other stuff sorted first. I reckon i'll be buying some pretty sticky tyres, as they won't need to last for 10's of thousands of miles.

I had that code gearbox in my mk2 20vt with a Quaiffe LSD. Was bloomin awesome!!! Ratios are indeed quite well suited. I seen 150mph++ (way off the clocks!). Much fun indeed! Great build, keep it up
Guys, I've decided to buy a downpipe rather than faff about making one..... Is there anyone else that can supply these other than Trackslag or Qpeng? (oh and which of the above are best quality?) .....and some more engine build up progress....
Old rod selector removed today. Got a bit of adaptation to do on the TT selector to make the fixings work now Studs extended using nuts welded to cap-head bolts.
