Is it true the early solid lifter 8v mk2 cars were lighter than the later GTIs?

From VAG UK Golf Brochure 420/1190.02.25 - 9/85:

GTi 3 dr Solid Lifter EV = 2028 lbs (No kg figure quoted)

From VAG UK Golf Brochure 620/1190.24.25 - 1/87:

GTi 3 dr Hydraulic EV = 2029 lbs (920kgs) Steel Wheels

    16 V 3 dr (KRor PL?) = 2117 lbs (960 kgs) Alloy Wheels

So, I recon that my EV Basic is probably down at about 900 kg with the Steels on and would probably approach 890 kgs with the lightened P-Slots.

ps. Danny. I could save another 1 lb in weight if you sorted me a solid lifter head. And, if mr hillclimber were to port it for me, possibly another 1/2 lb!

    Da

Do you think 6x15 r8's weigh less than the 6x14 steel wheels?

I am sure that they do. Aren't these wheels both on the wheel weight guide?[:s]

    If not, they should be.

I like the sound of that...In fact that will make a wounderful noise all these modified motors.
Will the members of the PFFMV corner be able to respond in both power and torque money......... [:D]? That could be a very interesting day indeed...

That's not what the UK brochure states! 960kgs as post #102

    http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2065350&postcount=102

Perhaps that 933 kgs weight is for the original German Basic model without all the extras that were lumped in to rob the UK punters?

Electric Windows, Central Locking, Sunroof, Radio and Speakers, Side Repeaters, Adjustable Height Front Seats, Tinted Glass, 16v Badges Front, Rear and on the Glove Box Lid. And, if you lump in Power steering, which many had, then the weight would be about 970 kgs.

And later in the year there should be 2 16v MK1's, both on ITB's... one mild spec 2ltr around 200hp, one wild 1800 around 220. Oh and maybe a carb 2ltr 16v Mk1.

I can feel a day of noise & rpm coming on!

All subject to valve size used... less weight with bigger holes or better torque spread with correct size ports to enhance the 8v advantage!

This is all getting away from the point is'nt it...

Just found a 1988 UK Spec. Driver brochure.

    Mk2 Driver Weight = 1918 lbs (870 kgs)

So, if you accept that my EV Basic uses the same bodyas the Driver, ie NO SUNROOF!

Then comparing the possible weight differences of the two:

    Rear Brakes: Driver Drums v EV B Discs - approx +4kgs = 874 kgs

    Anti-roll Bar: Driver 0 v EV B x 1 = approx +5 kgs = 879 kgs

    Radio, Speakers and Aerial: Driver x 1 EV B x 0 = approx -2 kgs = 877 kgs

    Door Mirror: Driver x 2 int adjust v EV B x 1 ext adjust = approx -2 kgs = 875 kgs

    Seats: Driver x 2 adjustable height v EV B x 0 = approx -5 kgs = 870 kgs

    Fuel Supply: Driver Carb v EV K-Jet = approx +10 kgs = 880 kgs

Spare Wheel: Driver Full Size v EV B Space Saver = approx -10 kgs (incl. carpet) = 870 kgs

    Engine: Driver 1600cc v EV B 1800cc = approx - 3 kgs = 867 kgs

    Chin Spoiler: Driver Small v EV B Larger = approx + .25 kgs = 867.25 kgs

    Side Repeaters: Driver x 1 set v EV B x 0 = approx - .1 kgs = 867.15 kgs

    Heated Washers: Driver x 1 set v EV B x 0 = approx - .05 kgs = 867.1 kgs

    Side Trim: 88 Driver wide v EV B 86 narrow = approx - 1 kg = 866.1 kgs

    Height Adjustable Seat Belts: Driver x 1 v EV B x 0 = approx - .5 kgs = 865.6 kgs

    Exhaust: approx + 10 kgs = 875.6 kgs

Can't think of any more differences, so my EV weighs 875.6 kgs!

Err....Best weigh it and compare to the spec source.
Same thing we would do, by testing and comparing with the VW published plots and figures for 8v vs 16v.

If I could only afford to put it on the road, I'd weigh it tomorrow!

My wheel weighing digital scales aren't quite up to the job!

If you lot would paypal me 1500 (Shockers, CVs, Exhaust, Tax, Insurance, NCT, Ferry) I'd bring it over for the RR tests!

After 4 x PBs, this EV is the uber fast![:*:]

yes messed the figure up sorry.

not really bothered about it all as mine was such an enjoyable drive & at the time (remember i have owned my mk1 longer than some members have lived on here lol) i just decided back then i wanted a very reliable car and a tuned 8v fitted the gap though was an expensive option compared to a 16v (i had 123k miles on the limiter every day without a mechanical fault).

I managed to find an old rr printout, i think it was my 8v and gvk's 16v (was down a touch though not important as more a comparison for the day & some of the more crazy tuned 16v's were way higher on the day):

I could have had a wilder cam & shorter gears but i liked it with the long 4+E box i ran and probablly why it lasted so long with the limiter set to 6300.

will be nice to drive her again after so many years & why i fell in love with 8v's (tuned of course).

Almost made me yelp with joy for my mk2 driver! Until it dawned on me. My version is full fat with central locking, sunroof and a 1.8 under the hood. :0(
