What would you be driving? I'm mean realistically, something that you can afford now.

Was asked by a work colleague based on the fact they know I'm Golf crazy and I found it really hard to decide. There are cars like E30 M3s and Integrale Evos that I would have in a split second, but on my budget there wasn't much I could say that I'd really want.

I'd want something rwd and old that I could muck about with, and eventually decided that it would probably be a Mk2 Escort, something like this.

Still get solid Mk2s for a couple of grand tops, Mk1s on the other hand are 3 times the price of Mk2s.

A Vauxhall Astra and a Suzuki Jimny.

    Oh damn damn damn.

Must buy another fast car again one day. Having said that the Astra is as quicker than a 150PD Golf...

Instead of my Passat, hard to say, nothing really sits in the market like VW. Premium Economy or Ecomony Premium tbh. 3 series is too small and expensive, c class too expensive. But Vectra's and Mondeo's just rub me up the wrong way. Nasty seats and dash.

Alfa 156, Mazda 6 or knowing the dude that originally bought my car before emigrating and giving it to me a Rover 75 [xx(]

Here here. Super little cars, and you can make them look really awesome if you go down the modded oem route

I do prefer the look of the Mk1s, but they are expensive and someone I know that has raced and rallied both variants says the Mk2 is a better car.

I do like the AE86 Corollas aswell, but again, they seem to go for silly money, a jap import place near me sold one for 6.5k and it was quite shabby!

Yeah mk2's are sweet i just prefer the rounded mk1 myself & back in the day they wouldn't have been as expensive as now.

    Totally agree with you.

The bloke who used to rally them scrapped about 50 Mk1 and Mk2s back in the 80s and early 90s because they weren't worth much back then, he said most could have been saved but at the time it wasn't worth it, he's kicking himself now. Although he does own a rather nice 350bhp V8 Mk2 Escort at the moment.

I am a VW fan through & through but any old retro car has so much more character than anything after imho.
