I used to take the trouble to explain myself on here, but got called a know-it-all by somebody, i wonder who Probably the same person who's only ever explained himself in one thread, where it was explicitly ask not to Nice bloke Mark.
Few of us had mk2 Escorts as our first/second cars after passing our tests in late 80s early 90s - if we knew how much money they make these days, maybe we wouldn't have been so reckless and smashed 'em up Well , I did say maybe. I'd love a proper old mk2 Escort. Was drooling over Colin Mcrae's rally car he had built on the 'rally legend' DVD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1E-5_se44A Checking through the thread seems we have a few old Skool Escort fans on here.
I want one too a mate just sold his mk2 16v track car and bought one with the money he got for the mk2, it's a 3.0 but still 280+ bhp and no vanos issues. I went round the 'ring in this one in '06 driver is chassis engineer for Jag, it was a 3.0 with cage , stripped, Billy PSS9s and R tyres and did a low 8 min BTG lap, pretty impressive. What made me sick was at the time the car stood him at what I've spent on the mk2 over the years [:^(]
I remember seeing Colin and Alistar mucking about in their Mk2s at the Rally Day at Combe a couple of years ago now in the rain. This was the latest one he wrote off, had a coming together with a hay barrel on the first stage of the Tour of Cornwall Rally, twisting the chassis. Still finish second in class though against a lot more expensive and complex machinery. You can just see the V8's fan sticking out the grill
The one car I've always wanted ... Ferrari ? Porsche ? Lamborghini ? No, a Mk2 RS Escort. You should know from previous threads of years gone by, I'm a *BIG* blue oval man !
I'm a big fan of rwd Fords, not so much fwd ones. Have to blame my old man for that, he's had various Sierras for years now.
Oooh Mk3 RS1600i, S1 RST, Mk3 XR3i ... I'll have one of each thank you please. I turned down a spotless white RS1600i about 5 years ago. New T&T, never been welded and the guy only wanted 750 for it. At the time I already had several cars and didnt have the space. To say I'm kicking myself now would be an understatement. Recently though, I have seen a few sensibly priced examples and given the insanity of Mk2 Escort prices think they are, despite being wrong wheel drive, great value for money. I'll always want a Mk2 Escort, and frankly can afford one, but I refuse to pay the sort of prices some owners demand. Hmm ... superb.
Quite like the RS1600i's rather have one of them over a S1 RST. The S1s are nice to look at, but I really don't like the way they drive.
RS1600i are slow and very rattly - I nearly bought one years ago until I drove it. Had a S1 RST, biggest pile of rubbish I've ever bought, spent more time in bits than driving it. Was very tidy bodily, never been welded etc.
I was thinking RS1600i with a mildly tuned Zetec wouldn't be bad, still wouldn't have on over a Golf. And I agree with you about S1 RSTs, don't know why people put so much power through them when they can't handle anymore than 160bhp.
