Im very curious as to how long would a conversion take to do ? and what sort of costs are involved ? As said before very interesting reading !
Blimmin el, not too sure really. Depends how you do things on both accounts really. It would take a lot of time to collect all of the parts as a lot of the stuff would all be aftermarket as well as some fabrication, ie, boost pipework, inlet manifolds, fueling etc. Things like using sandwich plates instead of stripping the engine and changing the pistons would have a effect, things like that really. As for costs i'd say a minimum of about 3k not including labour.
Got a bit bored so i've made a few changes and have 'taken it back to the old skool': red stripe quad lamp grille back on, orange front and side repeaters back on and rear wiper back to it original position. Before: After: What do you think? Subtle mods or keep it completly original?
Exciting update ! ! Rear disks and pads were on their way out so after collecting all the bits and bobs for a week or so i pretty much replaced all of the rear brake setup Brembo disks Ferrodo DS2500s Mk4 rear calipers (painted black) Goodridge conversion hoses New handbrake cables New bearings ATE superblue fluid Willwoods are going on the front so i've started collecting the bits for that so hopefully they should be up and running in the next month.
Old 256mm setup: Parts to go on this weekend: Wilwood 4-pots: Brackets (cheers Chris!) Calipers mounted up: 280mm OE disks: Fluid, spacers, goodridge hoses, brake compensator valve and studs/nuts: Hopefully have some 'after' pics at the end of the weekend if all goes well.
Finally finished my brakes this evening. Made the brake lines, fitted the front calipers, studs, disks, rear brake lines, rear compensator valve. Just got to get some new disk retaining screws and drill and tap new holes and bleed the whole system. Anyway took a few piccies along the way to keep things updated:
Yeah standard bolts are fine. I plan to take it on a few track days this year so it just makes things easier as I'm also running spacers and the calipers hit the inside of the wheel.
Nope, got it from Euro Car Parts for about 20. I normally try to go genuine where possible but VW wanted something stupid like 70!
Cheers mate, 4 doors rule!!!! I'm pretty happy with the stage the engine is at at the moment as nothings really on its limits. Things like brakes (now done) and suspension now need attention. Once the suspension is sorted it could do with a bigger intercooler, maybe aquamist, bigger turbo and then i'm into changing fueling and inlet territory which will require transmission changes and . I do need to baffle the sump asap though for its first track outing. Next on the list is coilovers, arbs and polybushes in the very near future
good read, only just noticed your thread. this answer my questions about your braided lines its all looking tidy, good to see some commitment even after the knocking
Cheers, gave it a good wash yesterday as its back up and running and thought it would be rude not to take some pics. Thought i'd get all 'arty' in the process
Now that the brakes are sorted its suspension time. The bloke who had the car for the short time it was out of the family changed the shocks and springs but they weren't that great Old front: Old rear: Whilst it was all apart i thought it would be rude not to change some other bits. New bit include; KW varient 1's, poly bushes, new genuine wishbones, ball joints, nuts and bolts etc. Old 18 year old wishbone: Nice new poly bushed wishbone: I originally brought some febi wishbones which were pretty much identical to the OEM ones but a little thinner however the hole where the rear bush goes wasn't deep enough. So OEM it is. All back together again Gave it a little clean this morning and heres how it now sits: Really happy with the handling now. Next on the list are arbs, lower wishbone extenders and i'm still waiting for the rear beam bushes.
