I have a Mk2 and love it to bits.

I'd also like to have an R32 if I had the money.

And I like Matt Sutherland. I love the way he chucks down the bait, and you all swallow it hook, line and sinker.

    Keep it up, Matt! ;)

If no-one bought new cars then there would be no older cars.
When I bought my Mk2 it was money that was the decider as I was in the process of rebuilding a house so money was tight but now that I could afford a new or newer car I choose not to as I think it is a bit of a waste of money but someone has to buy them and lose shedloads in the process so that I can buy them at a reasonable price.

    Nice controversial thread Drew!

One of the main reason I love my mk2 is because anyone can look at my car and tell im a car enthusiast. Anyone can tell that a mk1 or mk2 in good condition is owned by a enthusiast where as the majority of modern "sports car" owners, R32 owners, etc.... I would say are not. They have simply bought the car as a status symbol and nothing more.

Dont get me wrong, I intend to have a modern sports car of some kind in the future and I also hope to own a M3 e30 one day. But as a 21 year old student I cant think of any other car that could for fill my requirements and give me as much pleasure as my mk2!

I intend to be just like you one day!

Owning an old car is great, because it gives you a genuine reason to go and rummage around at scrapyards.

    End of argument

Just spent the last 45 mins reading this thread. funny as f**k

Just to put my 2p worth in, I am 32 and drive a Mk2, I have owned / driven newer but I still prefer the Mk2. Sure its not the fastest car on the road, but it feels quick when you drive it. Ive driven a mates Mk4 V5 and it just feels like your sat on your driveway [:s] it was just as fast, but didn't feel it.

If any thing goes wrong on my car I know I can fix it myself quite cheaply, where as a lot of newer cars, if something goes wrong it is usualy sorm sort of electrical widgetry that I dont understand let alone know how to fix, and costs more than my Mk2 to replace.

Besides, we need people to buy new cars so they can bed them in for us for when we buy them for a fraction of their original purchase price in a few years time. ;)

How about the best of both the little worlds we seem to live in on here?

Own a track biased mk2 AND get to use an R32 at the weekends:lol:

Oh and whoever said that the R32 doesn't get any attention, they should've been driving around Lincs/Norfolk with us yesterday in the sun. [:D]

I haven't read all of this thread, and im sure with the amount of replies someone has already made aa very similar point but to put things in perspective:

VW Golf GTi with a few mods and a mild engine conversion - 1250

Honda Civic Type R in standard trim (which is supposed to be the best hot hatch money can buy) - 15000 (roughly)

Raced the said golf against the mentioned civic a few months back (wasnt me driving) and the golf beat it not by a huge amount but it won. Obviously round a track it would probably pip the golf, but then it wouldnt if i used the 13750 saved on upgrading the golf, in fact if i was to spend that much i think it would be chasing scoobys and the like.

The only argument i can give for having a newer car is the added refinment and saftey, but then if u buy a car purely on those cridentials then ur on the wrong forum.

Im glad people buy new cars because (as mentioned before) it enables them to feed down the market so that people like me can afford them but these people who makje out it isnt worth tuning an old car, its a load of rubbish!
