No point in performance mods for old cars

    the st owner did know as its a friend and he kept up with him

    but his driver is stupidly stripped of everything that has no real function for driving

    Possibly referring to the original poster? I don't think it is alive and well (the thread has been resurrected but the original post was back in 2004) and most owners of older VWs are happy enough with tasteful mods. Engine/performance mods can be kept under the bonnet and don't take away the original car's looks, so can be very subtle indeed. That there are still a significant amount of unmodified older VWs, is probably a reflection that they were pretty good to start with anyway.
