Cheers for your help bud, its much appreciated. Ive filled the tank and stuffed some injector cleaner in it, but the car is now running to bad to even drive it! Ive got a mobile mechanic guy thats coming to look at it in the morning to see what he can find. I know he probably hasnt got vagcom, but atleast he will be able to check for certain faults that i cant. If this fails its booked into Volkswagen on wednesday morning. Should a fuel pump relay or any relay for that matter get quite warm when in use?? I'm thinking the (perhaps) knackered fuel pump is putting extra stress on the relay causing it to get warmer than it should. Bah i dont know anymore, i hate not having a car and theres no way im going to resort to using peasant wagons!!!
when you get the kangaroo juice thing does it go away if you pull back off the throttle?? yes means fuel pump and/or fuel system, is it through out the rev range, or just between certain revs? yes to specific revs indicate electrical! through out indicates fuel system/pump forte specialist injector cleaner is much better than millers, and harder to find and more expensive, but really works imo hth
Had a guy come out today and run a full diagnostic check on it using a snap on system, not vagcom the ecu didnt return any faults at all. The fault is only really there when in the lower revs (e.g. doing 30 in 5th) it will splutter and judder, sometimes cutting out. And if you tap the throttle when idling it will splutter before picking up the revs, however it idles fine, and as of late it has pretty much got ****ty throughout all the revs unless you really punch it. He has suggested i try the coil and amplifier module before doing anything else. It's booked into VW on friday morning, how im going to get it there i dont know. oh and he ran a fuel pump pressure test on it and it was delivering a strong 3psi, so no problem there apparently. What i do from here i dont know, i dont see how VW are going to find it cheaply, it could be hundreds of things, just hope it isnt a hard to find electrical fault. I just wanna get back into my dub [:^(]
i have just made a massive difference to my car. took off the fuel pressure regulator and put some wd40 in there. i think it was sticking before (the hose had fallen to bits and maybe stuck in the open position. i now have loads more throttle response and no pinking. i will put some oil in there next to make sure its perfect worth a check on yours incase it is trying to permanently run rich
I hope that was a typo - 3psi MIGHT do for a carb engine if you're lucky, 3 bar from the pump is too little for an EFI system, 3 bar after the FPR is probably alright (can't remember if they regulate to 3 or 3.5 bar).......... Assuming the fuel pump is OK, I would go with vwgolfgtimkii's suggestion, your hall sender could well be breaing down......
Ahhh sorry, the fuel pressure was measured just before the fuel rail after the fuel pressure regulator, it sat at around 3 and peaked to 3.5 when revving it. and wasnt effected when the engine spluttered. Im going to get to a scrapyard and change the amplifier module and coil today hopefully, if this doesnt work im going to change the hall sender. Is this the little module just below the distributor?
i know mines mk1 but my fuel pressure is spot on at 17.5psi, not too sure where that was tested at tho!!!!! tenner says its fuel at vw
Sounds like a hall sender problem i had on my mk 2. Its a quick check with a meter, its possible its shorting out and preventing a signal to the ecu.
Well VW now have my car[:^(] Whats the betting that they cant find the fault and i get stung in the process??
Not being funny mate but you've been told several times by several different people. When it comes to trial and error, you should start at the cheapest part first and work your way up the scale. At least four people have said the hall sender unit is a known dodgy part, and as they're not a huge amount, I'd change that first...... Like I said, not wishing to be rude or anything, but take the hint.
No offence mate, but finding a hall sender isnt the easiest thing in the world to do. Ive phoned many places to try and find one and there all saying it comes as a unit with the distributor which is stupidly overpriced, i cant find any 16v abf's local to me at any scrapyards etc because there not that common, so changing the hall sender unit is something i havent been able to do!!! Anyway, ive had the car back from VW and it came up with the fault water temp sender. They have replaced this and stung me in the process aswell as changing the fuel pump relay. Now ive got the car its worse than ever and i had to coast home as it kept cutting out!! these are meant to be VW technicians that did this!! i feel sick, there now closed and there is nothing i can do until the morning. Im so ****ing mad its not even funny. Its 10x worse infact and when idling the rev needle is all over the place which it didnt even do before!!!! Where do i stand with all this?? Im now 102 out of pocket! im seriously seriously ****ed off, ive spent hundreds on this car trying to get it running perfect. oh forgot to mention my fuel economy has gone from 35+ mpg when driven sensibly to 15mpg.
Well they need to take it back in and sort you out. Take no prisoners about it. Doesnt sound like the've even driven it Im sure once you've ( VW... ) found the problem it will all make sense and as for the amount you've spent on the car already, at least those parts wont need replacing for a while..
The thing that worries me is that they have actually driven the car, for 6 miles apparently!! Im so annoyed, gonna bug me all weekend now had plans to do stuff in the car. I just dont understand how replacing a temp sender can suddenly make the car 10x worse. Would a duff hall sender be picked up with a diagnostics computer?? This is rediculous, the supposed new fuel pump relay happens to be some mouldy looking old thing with tarnished pins and is 3yrs old! theyve replaced me newish one with something they found in a bin by the look of it.
bet the computer found the wtar temp thing, but that woldnt cause your problems, so theyve changed the FUEL PUMP relay, and fobbed u off, give em hell matey
Dont you worry i plan on doing so, there not gonna hear the end of this. Im going to have a brand new engine by the time ive finished with them!!! Im on the look out for a hall sender unit if anyones got one.
Make sure you ring them in the morning and to expect you first thing tuesday then they cant fob you off later. Wouldnt know if there workshops would be open on a saturday. You took it to a WV dealer for repairs without the bull, thats what your paying for. Try not to swear at them though... Sure they will sort you out.
unfortunatly the hall sender is part of the dizzy and you cant get one seperate mate, however a good way to test is when it is juddering/cutting out etc, take off the dizzy plug, pop a bit of thin metal (paperclip etc) into the middle connector of the plug and touch it against the block, that should spark, if not, theres yer problem, ive got a feeling if you replace the dizzy everything would be fine, get VW to test fit one for fooking you around, then tell them Club GTI sent you, they should realise then that they are heavily outnumbered in the brain department and give you a free car (they wont but meh)
