So now the problem is just how to get a nice water mist into the inlet ..... I'm thinking about something using a garden sprayer ....

    Sound like a good plan...

One hand keeping the throttle open, and the other pumping the garden/ plant sprayer. You should be able to get a fairly even mist. Might give it a try at the weekend.

    Cheers

I wouldn't, unless you bypass the charger pulley first - otherwise you'll get air coming out of the tube, not water sucked in!

That would probably do the job if you have no usable vacuum connection......

I might try this on my mates Driver, it still runs on sometimes when turned off, when he first got it it used to run for 20 odd seconds on it's own after turn off. Probably coked up big style.

Is this worth doing on a 124k 8v engine, or will it do more harm than good?

It won't do any harm, all it does is clean the combustion chambers etc. of carbon.

You boys out there with cats should be a little careful as you don't want all that carbon in your cat. Also Oil changes are recommended shortly after you disturb any carbon (whether it be injector cleaning or combustion chamber cleaning) in the engine. Just remember carbon is evil [:x] .

All that carbon goes through your cat anyway - the steam breaks it up small, and it'll break up further and go throught the cat under exhaust gas pressure. Oil change is definitely a good idea though, specially after injector cleaner.

Just ran this teqhnique on my Mk2 16v.

Unplugged the ISV, take the idle screw out and a standard size vacuum pipe fits in here perfectly and you can actually partially screw it in as well.

I "sipped" about 1/4 pint of water through while revving at 2500 ish, steam from the back and it runs a bit rough on the water obviously.

Reconnected everything, ran a bit rough for a few secs till I revved it and then ran fine.

Just taken it out and it does seem better, seems to pull much better between 3-5k, now almost breaks traction in 2nd where it never used to!

    Cheers TSC!

Think I might run a pint through and then see how cheeky I can be with the ignition timing ... :)

I run a full pint or more through - and remember, I invented water in the first place.......
And then made it into wine. [:D]

Yeah, I will run some more through, but cos I'm a big wuss I bottled it half way through, I also need a longer vacuum lead, it was all way too precarious, bottle almost ended up on the alternator a few times

I tried this last weekend too.
Removed the idle screw like Joe, and put a pint and a half through, Lots of steam and some crap came out of the exhaust. Can't really tell if there is any difference as i haven't driven the car with the 16v in yet but it did seem to rev a bit more freely after.
My Dad has played with engines for 25 years and has never heard of it, he was very dubious but now he is a believer!!
Right, now TSC how can i clean out my dirty injectors without having to buy new ones?
