Mucking about in my mk1 early this evening. I'd been adjusting the rear brakes (had been sticking) and was out to get them good and hot to see if I'd fixed it (yup! ). Round one... Came through my local town on the way home and stopped at a set of traffic lights. Mk4 Golf pulls up alongside. Very low, very big alloys (18+?). Made my mk1 look like it was on stilts. Big blip of the throttle giving a very throaty noise. What's all this then? Obviously he's clocked my GTI. In for a penny in for a pound.... Green lights, off we go and I'm ahead.... and pulling away.... easily.... very easily..... back off and let him catch up. It's a TDI with a red D and I. 115 or 130bhp I presume, sorted. He pulls off a bit later and waves in appreciation.... Round two The next traffic lights believe it or not. Of course, its a nice sunny day and a mk1 MR2 pulls up alongside. Rev, rumble rumble rumble. Young lad and his girly. I've no idea how quick a Mk1 MR2 is but in for a penny in for a pound.... Green lights, a bit of wheelspin from me and a very loud noise from the MR2 (stupid exhaust anyone?) but... I'm ahead, just.... and pulling away a little.... and a bit more.... and he's given up.... Round three Going down my favourite twisties I see two cars ahead, a Lotus Elise and a Nissan 350Z, they are behind some old tractor. Just as I catch up they get past and I manage to sneak in as well. What followed was 11 miles of pure fun. The Lotus and the Nissan were really going for it, but were unfamiliar with the road. I was way down on power in comparison, but knew the road like the back of my hand. Stayed with them all the way from Tenterden to Kingsnorth through the back lanes. Obviously I couldn't get past them, but staying up with them was quite achievement! I was actually sweating hard by the end of it and really tired out! Saved the best bit to last though.... They pulled in at a petrol station just before I turned off so I pulled in behind them (I was getting a bit worried by a bit of brake fade by this point so I was quite relieved!) Both of them get out and walk across. I wind down the window a crack.... "What the F*** have you done to this Golf??!!!?!" "Erm... it's standard mate." Wish I'd had my digital camera to take a picture of his face! Cheers, Drew.
thought the TDI with the red T and I were 150bhp ones? mkI MR2's are only reasonably fast, but they feel a lot quicker inside them, due to the fact that you feel like you're shrink wrapped in them! what engine's in your mkI again?
Well played Drew Dont get much of this round my way but when it does happen its usually a Nova or something. Still, as you say in for a penny in for a pound, my valver loves teaching young pups in Saxos a lesson
Excellent stuff Must have been good fun. I like it when that sort of thing happens. hoorah to the mk 1
Terrible init.... I must admit, there is usually quite a collection of interesting machinery on the twisties near my house on a Sunday/bank holiday early evening. Roads are very quiet, so I guess a lot of people go out for a blast. Last week was the R32, this week the Elise and the 350Z, I'm hoping for a real challenge next week My neighbours son has just bought a 3.2V6 Audi TT, so maybe I'll have a go at chasing that next. Cheers, Drew.
, i was messing with an R32 coming back from Castle Combe today with velly but the guy sussed that mine wasn't normal so didnt bother much, tryed blipping past him & pulling away a few times but nothing?
Mk1 GTI's are great on the twisties. I remember having a go with a Honda Civic Type R, good fun until we came to a straight where he blitzed me. Ah, all will change soon enough tho
