Tubs and GVK are very close... mutual appreciation society And as for Garys request for a Bruntingthorpe bash - yes please. But Tubs, you will have to strip your car back to standard in order to make it fair
That was Reeves mk1 with 400+bhp 1.8T around Bedford Autodrome, not really a road car by any means that one
But thats not the challange. The challange is 3k old car as it is on road Vs. 10/15/20/30k car as it is on road. Edited by: Tubthumped
Okay - in that case we do it when my car is worth 3000... say about 10 years time? You cant use a modified car against an off the shelf car. Otherwise we may have to recruit MIK VW with his Remapped R32 Edited by: Rob.gti
We chose to drive totally uncomfortable mk2s with rock hard suspension and no paddding on the seats You chose to spend 20k on the R32 Rob As Tub says, the 'challenge' is to compare the cars in their 'natural' state
Yawn! Modifed against standard. No contest boys. You stick to throwing thousands at your cars and I will use the same money to buy mine outright.... even though its on lease
Then stop refering to me throwing 20000 at a new car. Very strange arguement this is turning into If you really need to race then fine - but cars in "natural" state are standard. This includes Drews MK1 Edited by: Rob.gti
I'm not just saying you're throwing money at a new car, that is your choice, all I'm after is a timed comparison between new and old cars, whether the new or old cars are modified or not. A standard mk2 16v goes and handles like a piece of crap, who ever would want to 'race' anything in one of those? I didn't realise we're having an argument Edited by: G_V_K
I'll give you a good indication of what a standard R32 can do round a track in my hands - it kept a 200 bhp mk2 Jetta at bay. That doesnt meant to say its better or worse - my opinion is that it wasnt entirely suited to the track in comparison, but there again the stripped out dedicated track car was a touch more uncomfortable on the drive home. The comparison would be to give the keys to someone like the stig, and let the same driver set a time in each car available. at the end of the day who cares, Drew went out and he had a bit of fun. Would the 'fuss' be the same if he was the owner of an R32 and the other cars involved changed to high end GT's such as a porsche 911 or Aston?
How many of you guys have driven most of the vairiants of all 4 Golf MK's? Well I have and I can tell you that best cars on an overall basis are the MK2 and the MK4. That being said the MK1 and the MK3 are still great cars. Having said the MK2 and MK4 are the best all round cars you can't compare them. It's like comparing an E Type against an X Type, not the same type of car.
I've driven 'quite a few' Golfs from a 1600 GTI mk1 up to the R32 Including Caddy trucks, VR6 mk3s, mk2 8 and 16v GTI's , mk2 Drivers ('wivout' cams),mk3 1.8 'rolling stones' ( I can see where they got the 'rolling' part of the name from) , mk3 and 4 diesels, mk4 2.0 'GTI' 8v x-flow, mk4 1.8T........
